"Say it. "I'm worried you'll think it's unkind." "Say it." "Bird of paradise." I snort. "That is unkind. A bird? Really?" Blake slides into the circular leather booth that wraps around the table. It's warm in here, and sheunzips her light-blue hoodie all the way. "It's not just any bird." I slide in across from her. "Okay, I'll bite. Why that one?" "The males engage in elaborate courtship displays to attract their females. Sometimes more than one per breeding season." "So they're avian man whores. Bird whores? Got it." Her laugh sends a zing down my spine. "I'm sorry." "You should be. Now, let's see if this classic courtship display will work on you." I get back to my feet. "Can I get you a drink?" She bites down on her lips, like she's holding back a smile, her eyes shining with amusement.

Es gibt Emotionen. Es gibt Rage. Es gibt Wut und Trauer und Action und Liebe. Nero hat es mir vorher schon angetan. Ich finde diesen Charakter unglaublich interessant, vor allem, wie er sich mit Sandro als seinen kleinen Überwacher ein völlig neues Leben aufbaut, in einem kleinen Örtchen, wo jeder jeden kennt. Und ganz zufällig wohnt er Tür zu Tür mit einer Frau, die ihn überhaupt dazu verleitet hat, in Darkwater Hollow zu bleiben. Blake hat es nicht einfach. Sie wurde betrogen, arbeitet für ihren Ex und hat von der Gemeinde einen unschönen Stempel aufgedrückt bekommen. Sie ist allein und hat niemanden, schlägt sich aber durch und hat den Wunsch, endlich von diesem Ort zu verschwinden. Bis Nero, hier unter dem Namen Rowan Miller, aufkreuzt und ihr das Fell richtig schön gegen den Strich bürstet. Sie hat ihm an Anfang komplett abgestempelt, so wie es andere mit ihr getan haben. Ohne, dass sie sich die Mühe gemacht hat, ihn selbst kennenzulernen. Aber das ändert sich, als er seine Versprechen ihr gegenüber einhält und sich die beiden langsam annähern. Es war wirklich schön geschrieben. Nero hat damit zu kämpfen, auf einmal jemand anderes zu sein und findet Ruhe in Blake. Blake findet Zuversicht und neues Selbstvertrauen in Rowan, aka Nero. Nur, dass sie selbst eine Familie hat, die nicht ganz legal unterwegs ist. Und genau das bringt eine reele Gefahr mit sich, als diese Leute auf Rowan treffen und sich seine Geheimnisse langsam aber sicher selbstständig machen.
