Description

Goodreads Choice Award-winning poet USA TODAY bestselling author

In this fierce and lyrical poetry collection, Amanda Lovelace reclaims power for the witch--supernaturally powerful, fiercely independent, and unbreakably resilient.

This bold second book in Amanda Lovelace's "women are some kind of magic" series turns to the mythological character of the witch: a force unto herself, reclaiming her story with vulnerability and fury.

These moving, relatable poems encourage resilience and embolden women to take control of their own stories. Enemies try to judge, oppress, and marginalize her, but the witch doesn't burn in this one.

I did not enjoy poetry that much. I always thought that school had destroyed any love for it I had. Now, I realise that there was another reason: I had never before read poetry that spoke to me. I am glad I came across this book, and the previous one, (as well as poems from Dimoula and Rupi Kaur). Now I know that there is poetry for me. Poetry that is fuelled by rage and fire. I loved this one.

I started out thinking I'd like this more than the first volume, but after like twenty pages I could hardly bear it anymore. This is the same fucking phrase over and over again. And I'm still of the opinion that this is not poetry.

I didn’t like the structure of this book at all. Comparing women to witches and then use this as a theme in her writing annoyed me. No poem spoke to me or touched me. She might claim to be a feminist but her writing is misandrous.

“women don't endure simply because we can; no, women endure because we aren't given any other choice. - they wanted us weak but forced us to be strong.” i love feminism, but i hate THIS kind of feminism. she said it herself misandry!! some poems were good and relatable, but that's all.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. "The witch doesn't burn in this one" is Amanda Lovelace's second poetry collection after "The princess saves herself in this one" and I have been looking forward to reading it for so long! The poems here are pure awesomeness and while some made me cry, others made me giggle with how epic and encouraging they are. Amanda knows how to stand up for women and there wasn't a single disappointing page in this collection. Loved her writing from cover to cover and can't wait to read more of her beautiful work. I'm so grateful I got to review this!
