At The Mercury Theatre in London's West End, rumours are circulating of a curse.
It is said that the lead actress Lilith has made a pact with Melpomene, the tragic muse of Greek mythology, to become the greatest actress to ever grace the stage. Suspicious of Lilith, the jealous wife of the theatre owner sends dresser Jenny to spy on her, and desperate for the money to help her family, Jenny agrees.
What Jenny finds is a woman as astonishing in her performance as she is provocative in nature. On stage, it's as though Lilith is possessed by the characters she plays, yet off stage she is as tragic as the Muse who inspires her, and Jenny, sorry for her, befriends the troubled actress. But when strange events begin to take place around the theatre, Jenny wonders if the rumours are true, and fears that when the Muse comes calling for payment, the cost will be too high.

Als Jenny eine Anstellung am Theater bekommt aus dem ihr Bruder in Schande abgehauen ist, scheint ihre Aufgabe ganz einfach. Die neue Schauspielerin zu beschatten und ihre Geheimnisse an ihre Chefin weiterleiten. Das erscheint einfach, denn Lilith ist nicht gerade freundlich. Aber bald bekommt Jenny Mitleid mit Lilith die ebenso Spielball ist wie sie und einen teuflischen Pakt mit der Muse der Tragödie eingegangen zu sein scheint. Nichts in diesem Buch war wie es auf den ersten Blick scheint. Weder die Dyers, noch Lilith. Aber zum Glück ist Jenny nicht dumm und kann sich sehr gut zur Wehr setzen. Ich habe sie als Hauptfigur sehr genossen. Ich fand es nun nicht gruselig aber es hat mich gut unterhalten und Spaß gemacht und ich fand die Charaktere und die Geschichte um das Theater um sie herum richtig toll. Gerne hätte ich mir ein weniger offenes Ende gewünscht, aber es war irgendwie stimmig. Werde bestimmt noch andere Bücher von Laura Purcell versuchen.
