The Soulmate von Sally Hepworth ist ein Psychothriller, der einen vom ersten Moment an in seinen Bann zieht. Der Schreibstil ist mega gut – klar, intensiv und so fesselnd, dass man ständig das Gefühl hat, noch „nur ein Kapitel“ lesen zu müssen… und dann sind plötzlich wieder 50 Seiten vorbei. Die Spannung bleibt von Anfang bis Ende auf einem konstant hohen Level. Es gibt keine Längen, keine unnötigen Szenen – jede Seite trägt etwas zur Geschichte bei und treibt sie gnadenlos voran. Man fühlt sich als Leser*in permanent zwischen Vertrauen, Zweifel und Angst hin- und hergerissen. Besonders krass und genial gemacht sind die Wechsel zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart sowie die Perspektiven von Pippa und Amanda. Diese Zeitsprünge sorgen nicht nur für Tiefe, sondern auch dafür, dass man die Wahrheit Stück für Stück zusammensetzt – nur um sie im nächsten Moment wieder infrage zu stellen. Genau das macht den Thriller so süchtig: Man glaubt, man hat alles verstanden … bis man merkt, dass man sich vielleicht komplett irrt. Dieses Buch zeigt, wie dünn die Grenze zwischen Liebe, Abhängigkeit und Kontrolle sein kann – und wie gefährlich es wird, wenn jemand glaubt, seinen Soulmate um jeden Preis beschützen zu müssen. I am writing this while I still feel the surge of adrenaline this book gave me! The Soulmate is an absolutely unputdownable domestic suspense that caused a hot flush of irritation, combined with an icy chill with every insight I made page by page. Every family certainly have their fair share of troubles and dysfunctional relationships, but The Gerard’s packaged up as a happy family step well out of line! They live in a meshwork of mental illness, infidelity, and criminality - way out of what I dared to imagine!! The ending made me feel a bit sentimental *sniffing*. Didn’t see that coming at all, though I had umpteen scenes swirling on my mind as to how the story could end. Not a chance! This is my first novel by Sally Hepworth whilst I tremendously look forward to reading more of her impeccable writing! Easy 5 stars! Highly recommended!
