Nur Shay und ihre Freundin Laurel schaffen es damals, sich daraus zu befreien. Gemeinsam mit dem Host kehrt sie an den Ort zurück, den sie nie wiedersehen wollte. Ich hatte ehrlich gesagt anfangs meine Schwierigkeiten, in die Geschichte hineinzufinden, und habe ein paar Kapitel gebraucht, um wirklich drin zu sein. Aber je weiter ich gelesen habe, desto mehr hat mich das Buch gepackt. Die Kombination aus Gegenwart und Vergangenheit, die hier durch Podcast-Dialoge aufgearbeitet wird, fand ich richtig spannend umgesetzt. Besonders die Einblicke in Shays frühere Erfahrungen waren teilweise wirklich heftig und haben bei mir für eine richtige Gänsehaut gesorgt, aber im negativen Sinne. Es war schockierend, beklemmend und stellenweise kaum auszuhalten. Am Anfang konnte ich nur schwer nachvollziehen, wie man sich auf so etwas einlassen kann, aber je tiefer man in die Geschichte eintaucht, desto mehr versteht man die Dynamiken dahinter. Genau das fand ich gut gemacht, dieses langsame Begreifen und die Verknüpfung zur Gegenwart. Das Buch lebt für mich vor allem von dieser düsteren, intensiven Atmosphäre und den psychologischen Aspekten. Das Ende war für mich allerdings etwas drüber und hat mich nicht ganz überzeugen können, weil es mir ein bisschen zu viel des Guten war. Trotzdem ist es insgesamt ein spannender, schockierender Thriller, der definitiv im Kopf bleibt und den ich gerne gelesen habe.

It’s about a cult, the slim line of brainwashing and desire, misogyny, how awful men are, female rage, women’s rights AND wrongs and all in all it was just gripping. Look at the triggers before you read this because it really is what it is. It was a totally chilling read where I didn’t know what to feel half of the time and for that reason alone it deserves a 4.5⭐️ rating. As a woman, I am highly disturbed, scared and proud to be progressive, supporting women.
