When Libby Nicholls arrives in London, broken-hearted and with her life in tatters, the first person she meets on the bus is elderly pensioner Frank. He tells her about the time in 1962 he met a girl on the number 88 bus with beautiful red hair just like her own. They made plans for a date, but Frank lost the ticket with her number written on it. For the past sixty years, he's ridden the same bus trying to find her.

Libby is inspired by the story and, with the help of an unlikely companion, she makes it her mission to continue Frank's search. As she begins to open her guarded heart to strangers and new connections, Libby's tightly controlled world expands. But with Frank's dementia progressing quickly, their chance of finding the girl on the 88 bus is slipping away . . .

More than anything, Libby wants Frank to see his lost love one more time. But their quest also shows Libby just how important it is to embrace her own chance for happiness - before it's too late.

The author of The Last Library brings us this beautifully uplifting novel about how one chance meeting can change the course of your life forever

I think this book finished me. To be able to give it only 5 stars is almost a crime – this book deserves more than just stars. I went through several emotions, and I am definitely not okay. I cried, I laughed, I’ve been angry at Simon – that piece of shit – and I hoped that Frank would find his girl after all those years. Oh, what an extraordinary love story, and what a man, who was looking for the love of his life for years. And all those lives he improved or changed during his little adventure. I clearly can’t properly describe what a masterpiece this is and how much I enjoyed it.

Habt’s fein 🫶🏻 Sissy

Freya Sampson introduces readers to Libby and Frank, two characters whose lives intertwine on the number 88 bus. Libby, a young woman facing her own challenges, and Frank, the warm-hearted elderly gentleman on a quest to find his long-lost love, create a touching and memorable story. Libby's journey, her relationships with her sister, mother, and her toxic ex-boyfriend, offer a compelling exploration of complex family dynamics and unhealthy relationships. I found myself both captivated and at times frustrated by the behavior of Libby's ex-boyfriend and mother. It added a layer of tension and realism to the story, and I couldn't help but wish Libby had realized the toxicity sooner, although I understand how challenging that can be in reality. However, I was heartened by the moments when Libby found the courage to stand up to them, which resonated with me on a personal level. And Frank, the elderly character on the 88 bus, was an absolute gem. I found myself rooting for him to reunite with his long-lost love, and his warm-hearted presence added an extra layer of depth to the story. The atypical ending of the story adds a unique and authentic dimension to the narrative, emphasizing life's uncertainties and the importance of human connection. The book's exploration of dementia is also commendable, shedding light on a significant social issue. In summary, "The Girl on the 88 Bus" was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. It had a lot of heart, and I was emotionally invested in Libby's journey. It skillfully tackled complex issues and offered a unique perspective on life's uncertainties, all while highlighting the power of human connection. This is a novel that left a lasting impact on me, and I highly recommend it to others seeking a heartfelt and engaging read.
