Description

Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces.

Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury's heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn't impressed by good looks or fooled by false charm. He's sure Robin is a liar, a fortune hunter, and a heartless, greedy fraud - and he'll protect his niece, whatever it takes.

Then, just when Hart thinks he has Robin at his mercy, things take a sharp left turn. And as the grumpy baronet and the glib fortune hunter start to understand each other, they also find themselves starting to care - more than either of them thought possible.

But Robin's cheated and lied and let people down for money. Can a professional rogue earn an honest happy ever after?

Ame a Robin y a Hart.

“How is Verney?” He hoped the bastard caught plague, but it seemed only fair to make a concession.” Ganz viel Liebe!

I was a little miffed when I saw KJ Charles was publishing a new novel tnat wasn't the final instalment to her Will Darling Adventures. Suffice to say, I read into the wee hours and have forgone breakfast to read this book, and if I knew all her new books were to be like this, I could very well live waiting for Will Darling's finale forever. This was superb, in case I wasn't clear there. Actual conflict. Wonderful chemistry. So many emotions. Very, very lovable characters. More, PLEASE! EDIT: Holds true the second time round.

Very cute historical romance

Loved it

To be fair my english is probably not good enough for books set in a different time. A couple of times I did not quite understand everything even with a dictionary. But I don't think these few words would change my mind about how cute the story was. What I love especially is that the other characters have their own stuff going on. In a whole lot of books it feels like the side characters are just there for the main characters and to support the plot but here they had their own lives and struggels. Spoilers ahead The drama in the end felt a little... dramatic. But I am glad Marianne didn't marry that guy. And it was obvious to me from the second Edwina mentioned Alice needed a companion for her travels who that companion turned out to be.

The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ Charles is a historical romance that takes a familiar conflict and repeats it throughout the story—yet never in a way that feels lazy or poorly executed.

Instead, every recurrence peels back another layer of the characters’ motivations. It’s like watching the same problem from different angles, deepening our understanding each time and showing how both sides continuously work against their circumstances. One aspect I particularly appreciated is how Giles reacts when he discovers the truth. He doesn’t immediately accept it or respond with perfect understanding—he clings to his old values, shaped by the traditional environment he’s from. This feels realistic and grounded. His growth comes later, not just in the form of apologizing, but in genuinely reflecting and grasping how the situation looks beyond his worldview. Marianne, on the other hand, was sometimes frustrating. Her aggressive temperament is pointed out repeatedly as her main flaw, and it did become tiring. However, the payoff is satisfying: that very trait becomes her strength in the final act, as she takes control of her situation. It turns what felt like a flaw into a kind of superpower. One issue for me was the dialogue-heavy storytelling. It leans away from “show, don’t tell,” and that sometimes made it difficult to keep track of who was talking—especially between Robin and Hart. This could be on me as a non-native reader, but their voices blurred at times. Still, it makes sense that conversation is central: they spend much of the book alone together, forced into secrecy by their forbidden relationship and by the trauma both men carry from their pasts. Words are their only safe space, even when actions are denied to them. I also found Alice’s engagement to her tutor confusing. It’s hinted as an asexual partnership built on mutual passion for mathematics rather than romance, but from a modern perspective the age and power dynamics feel like a red flag. Historically it may be more acceptable, yet it’s hard not to view it through contemporary eyes and worry about her. Like many historical romances, the book emphasizes lineage, reputation, beauty, wealth, and honor. There’s the familiar dynamic of the charming poorer character versus the wealthy, emotionally distant one. In this case, Robin’s final gesture feels more emotionally meaningful than Hart’s, whose biggest contribution is essentially a job offer—something only possible thanks to his privilege. It’s romantic, but not in the same heartfelt way. Still, the two are undeniably sweet together, complementing each other’s strengths in a way that makes their relationship feel earned. Plus, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bit of smut—it didn’t feel gratuitous and fit well within the emotional arc. Overall, The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting is a quick and engaging read. Despite a few confusing choices and some dialogue-heavy moments, it succeeds through layered character work and relationships that feel real in their flaws and growth. I’d happily read more about these characters—Alice and Marianne especially shine as strong, memorable supporting women.

I disliked the main characters, I don't need an epilogue and I surely don't need a "two years later".

One of the best Enemies to Lovers I have ever read! Everything genuinely felt like they hated each other, and then they fell perfectly in love - aaaaaa! The social aspects were also addressed very well, and feminism was even included. Once again, perfect work by KJ Charles.
