The Dungeon Anarchist Cookbook is the third descent into madness in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and at this point I’m not even pretending to understand the rules of this universe anymore, and honestly? That feels intentional. The dungeon doesn’t want to be understood. It wants blood, spectacle, and increasingly unhinged decisions, and this book delivers all three in buckets. We’ve got a train system now. A TRAIN SYSTEM. Do I understand how it works? Absolutely not. Do I need to? Also no. The confusion kind of becomes part of the experience, like being duct-taped to the front of a speeding locomotive and told “figure it out or die.” It’s chaotic in a way that feels on-theme rather than sloppy, which is honestly impressive. Also, more surprise babies?? WHEN WILL IT STOP?? Every time I think the story has reached peak absurdity, it kicks the door down, throws something completely unhinged at me, and then keeps running like nothing happened. There is no stability here. There is only escalation. What really sneaks up on you, though, is the emotional weight. The glimpses into Carl’s past and childhood hit harder than they have any right to in a book that also features, you know, everything else going on. They ground him in a way that makes the chaos matter more. You’re not just watching a guy survive,.you’re starting to understand why he keeps going, and it makes the stakes feel sharper. And then there’s Donut. Still completely, gloriously unhinged. Still stealing every scene she’s in. I would follow her into battle, into disaster, into whatever bizarre mess comes next. Get ’em, queen. Katia, though… I wasn’t sold at first. Somewhere around the halfway mark, she started to grow on me, but I’m keeping one eye open. There’s something there that doesn’t quite sit right, and I don’t trust this story not to pull the rug out from under me. This book doubles down on everything the series does best: chaos, gore, emotional gut punches, and a refusal to play by any kind of normal narrative rules. It’s messy in a way that feels deliberate, confusing in a way that becomes immersive, and unhinged in a way that somehow works. I came for the carnage. I stayed for the characters. I’m still not okay.

Ohne den hätte ich deutlich länger gebraucht um alles zu verstehen, oder zumindest so zu tun. Dankbarerweise zieht der Author dem Leser den Zahn gleich, hier muss nichts verstanden werden. Es geht um den ✨️ Vibe✨️ Und wie dieses Buch vibet. Große Klasse, auch mit Momenten der Gemeinschaft in Orten, in denen man sie nicht vermutet. Ich habe es geliebt. Und ich mache mir mit jedem Buch mehr Sorgen um lieb gewonnene Nebencharaktere haben sie doch, ausgesprochener Weise, nicht die gleiche Plot Amor die Carl und Donut haben... Aber versuch mal dich weniger um die peeps zu scheren, dafür sind die viel zu sympathisch :(

Auch dieses Buch hat wieder viel Spaß gebracht. Gerade zum Ende wurde es extrem spannend. Ich mag auch wie die ganze Story und alle Charaktere immer Tiefe bekommen. ABER puhhh war das kompliziert. Und ja, der Autor hat am Anfang des Buches geschrieben, man muss es nicht verstehen, aber ich muss sagen, das hat bei mir zum Teil echt den Lesefluss gestört, weil ich mir nicht immer so gut vorstellen konnte, was da gerade passiert. Zum Ende wurde alles wieder eindeutiger, aber da habe ich mich auch gefragt, ob man es nicht simpler hätte schreiben können? Denn die Auflösung braucht dieses übertrieben Verworrene vom Anfang nicht unbedingt. Aber war, wie bereits erwähnt, wieder sehr unterhaltsam und ich freue mich auf den nächsten Teil.
I enjoyed this book, but the story was a bit overshadowed by the level construction. The character development was nice, and it had a lot of entertaining sequences. Sadly the style of the level took way too much space in the story and was so unclear that at some point I started to just skimming the explanations of what is where and how and who to pick up when with what. The big plot twist around why the level is the way it is couldn’t hit me out of the same reason. I just wanted the level to be done 😅 The humor was less in this book, which isn’t bad, but just a bit unexpected. Especially all the AI-commentaries on everything made it so fun to read and in this book it was lacking a bit.

🌟🌟🌟🌟.5 Ich liebe Carl, Donut und diese Story so sehr! Band 3 war wirklich ein noch größerer Fiebertraum als die ersten beiden Bände. Ebene 4 des Dungeons war sehr verwirrend und ich hab bis zum Ende die Mechanik und Logik dahinter nicht wirklich verstanden. Die meiste Zeit hab ich einfach gelesen ohne viel von der Logik hinter dem Rätsel der Ebene zu verstehen, weswegen ich das Bauch einfach ein bisschen schlechter als die ersten zwei Bände empfunden habe. Es gab wieder so unfassbar viele what-the-Fuck-Momente und es ist weiterhin super skurril und lustig. Ich bin weiterhin gespannt wie es weitergeht und absolut obsessed mit der Reihe.
Goddammit, Donut! What a ride that was. Completely bonkers but brilliantly so. I had a hard time with imagining the built of this floor but boy this was as much fun as it was confusing. Matt Dinniman has a way of telling this story that has me glued to the pages and now excuse me, the next book ist waiting for me. See you on the next floor.
