It’s been four weeks since the bloody showdown at Black Mesa, and Maggie Hoskie, Diné monster hunter, is trying to make the best of things. Only her latest bounty hunt has gone sideways, she’s lost her only friend, Kai Arviso, and she’s somehow found herself responsible for a girl with a strange clan power.
Then the Goodacre twins show up at Maggie’s door with the news that Kai and the youngest Goodacre, Caleb, have fallen in with a mysterious cult, led by a figure out of Navajo legend called the White Locust. The Goodacres are convinced that Kai’s a true believer, but Maggie suspects there’s more to Kai’s new faith than meets the eye. She vows to track down the White Locust, then rescue Kai and make things right between them.
Her search leads her beyond the Walls of Dinétah and straight into the horrors of the Big Water world outside. With the aid of a motley collection of allies, Maggie must battle body harvesters, newborn casino gods and, ultimately, the White Locust himself. But the cult leader is nothing like she suspected, and Kai might not need rescuing after all. When the full scope of the White Locust’s plans are revealed, Maggie’s burgeoning trust in her friends, and herself, will be pushed to the breaking point, and not everyone will survive.

Normalerweise hängt eine Reihe im zweiten Band durch. Dann wird es im dritten wieder besser, aber an den ersten Band reicht es nicht mehr heran. Nicht so in diesem Falle. Roanhorse hat in zweiten Teil deutlich zugelegt und alles, was mir am ersten Band nicht so gefallen hat, aufgeholt. Dadurch ist ein richtig spannendes und rasantes Buch entstanden. Man ist auch mehr in der Geschichte drin, da die Figuren mehr Tiefe haben und viel besser ausgearbeitet sind. Die Einführung von Ben tat der Handlung richtig, richtig gut. Die Actionszenen sind besser geschrieben, klarer und mit mehr Tempo, sodass die Stimmung entsteht, die im ersten Band noch gefehlt hat. Auch hat es mir persönlich sehr zugesagt, dass ich den Roadtrip der Helden sozusagen auf Google Maps mitverfolgen konnte. Sowas gibt bei mir Extrapunkte. Und natürlich noch einen riesigen Punkt extra dafür, dass das Liebesgedöns stark zurückgedreht wurde. Nämlich auf ein Niveau, das ich mehr als akzeptabel finde. Auf ein Level, bei dem sogar ich emotional dabei bin und mich freue, wenn sich das Paar schlussendlich in die Arme schliesst. Ja, das gibt es. Es kommt selten vor, aber wenn ein Autor es richtig macht, bin ich da auch mit dabei. Und hier hat Rebecca Roanhorse alles richtig gemacht!
Like the predecessor, a good read and well spend time. After a short time lapse it basically starts where the previous one stopped. The hunt continues. I am not exactly sure about all those Gods and the whole locust stuff, but if you enjoyed 'Trail of Lightning' you probably want to read this one as well.
