Aussergewöhnlich und düster mit viel Potential
Eine Leseempfehlung für Liebhaber nicht allzu "gewöhnlicher" Fantasy: Titel: "Ganz gewöhnliche Monster" Autor: J.M. Miro 1.Teil der "Dunkle Talente" Reihe (Anmerkung: Ich habe die Ausgabe vom Minotauro Verlag (span.) mit 619 Seiten gelesen.) Klappentext: England am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts: Es ist Nacht, eine junge Dienstmagd ist auf der Flucht vor der Rache ihres Herrn. Mit allerletzter Kraft schafft sie es, sich in den Waggon eines Güterzugs zu retten – nur um dort eine Entdeckung zu machen, die ihr Leben für immer verändern wird: ein Baby, dessen Haut in einem blauen Schimmer leuchtet. Damit beginnt ein Abenteuer, das von England in den Wilden Westen bis nach Tokio und an die Grenzen des Vorstellbaren führt. Ein Abenteuer voll Magie, Wunder und tödlicher Geheimnisse ... Gesamteindruck: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) Meine persönliche Meinung: Bei "Ganz gewöhnliche Monster" handelt es sich um eine stille, düstere Erzählung. Es beginnt mit der Einführung der Protagonisten und Antagonisten, wobei kleine Details ihrer (traurigen) Geschichten später in der Handlung immer wieder aufgegriffen werden. Das heisst, auch wenn sich gerade der Anfang der Story etwas hinzieht, wird man im weiteren Verlauf für aufmerksames Lesen belohnt. Die Charaktäre sind hervorragend strukturiert und werden glaubhaft beschrieben. Es sind keine Helden oder "Zauberer", die mit ihrer Magie "spielen", sondern sehen sich zum Teil selbst als Abnormalitäten (daher das Wort "Monster" im Titel des Buches). Ab der Mitte des Buches nimmt die Erzählung Fahrt auf, was sich auch in der Schreibweise des Autors widerspiegelt: kürzere Sätze und Kapitel, schneller wechselnde Erzählperspektive der handelnden Personen und wesentlich flüssigerer Schreibstil. Trotzdem kann man sich bei Szenenwechsel die Umgebung dank detaillierter Beschreibungen immer gut vorstellen. Das Finale, obwohl das Buch mit einem Cliffhanger endet, ist grandios und unerwartet, aber keines Falls an den Haaren herbeigezogen. Fazit: Meiner Meinung nach eine aussergewöhnliche, interessante Geschichte mit sehr viel Potential für die Nachfolgebände.
I'm glad I read this for a book club. Otherwise, I would've never finished it. It's not a bad book, it just took sooooo long for me to connect to most of these characters or find the story even a little interesting. Only after 75%, I became somewhat interested in what happened to the characters, and for a book of that size, that's a lot of pages to suffer through. So the first half of the book was just full of character introductions that were a little confusing and a lot of changes in scenery that happened a little too quickly to be comfortable. And it was surprisingly gory (which isn't a bad thing but still... surprising!) Anyways, the end was good, the antagonist was very cool, and even though the talented-kids-trope is slightly overdone IMO it had a unique spin to it :-)
An incredible, haunting, beautiful, ugly beast of a book. Ordinary Monsters reminded me of so many other magnificent books, while also carving a new path, all of it's own. At times a chaotic mess, at others an unforgettable epic, this book will stay with you for a long time after you've finished reading. I personally am excited to see where exactly J.M. Miro is taking us with this story and i'm equally as excited to see how he continues to develop the World he has created.
