About the book

Mikayla Bridge returns with Of Venom and Vengeance, a deliciously dark standalone companion novel to her YA fantasy tour de force, Of Flame and Fury, with a criminal underworld, dazzling magic and an enemies-to-lovers romance at its heart. Perfect for fans of Chloe Gong and Leigh Bardugo.

Inna is the perfect heiress to the Pallo crime family: poised, cunning, untouchable. Behind this glamorous facade, she hunts for her sister's killers, convinced her family are shielding her from the truth.

Rylan has sculpted himself into a talented thief for one reason: retribution for his family, who were murdered by Inna's mother. Armed with illusion magic, he plans to steal an ancient riddle from the Pallo vault, one that leads to a sleeping god. Whoever wakes the Serpent King will be granted any wish they desire. Rylan means to claim this power, and with it, Inna's ruin.

But when Inna catches Rylan sneaking past her family's security, they enter into a perilous alliance that neither intends to keep - even as bitter attraction ignites into something more . . .

Once again, I found myself admiring Mikayla Bridge's writing style. It's so vivid that it that keeps me turning the pages. Only this time, the story itself never quite managed to grip me. As a standalone set in the same world as Of Flame and Fury, I couldn't help but yearn for more of the phoenixes and the wider world lore that completely captivated me in the first book. Instead, this story shifts its focus to rival mafia-like families, dangerous alliances, and a mystery surrounding the sleeping Serpent King. I did enjoy the darker atmosphere, and the Serpent King was easily my favourite part of the book. Still, I was waiting for that moment where everything would click into place and completely sweep me away. It never quite happened. While I appreciated the story and enjoyed my time with it, it didn't leave the same lasting impression as its predecessor. That said... Mikayla Bridge has officially become an auto-read author for me. Even when this book isn't a perfect fit, her writing is. I'll happily and patiently wait to see what she comes up with next. I was so lucky to be able to do an immersive reading with both the eARC and the audiobook - and there is nothing better! Macmillan never disappoints, and the hearing-part was delicious as always. 4/5 stars Thank you @netgalley and @Macmillan.Audio and @macmillan for the eARCs! #OfVenomAndVengeance #NetGalley #Bookstagram
