Irland, in den Sechzigerjahren. Als ihr geliebter Ehemann Maurice zu früh stirbt, überwältigt Nora die Trauer. Doch der Alltag und ihre vier Kinder verlangen nach ihr. Mühsam versucht sie das Leben wieder aufzubauen, dass zertrümmert vor ihren Füssen liegt. Und das alles in den Konventionen, die alle von ihr erwarten. Doch Nora scherrt sich nicht um Skandale und wächst langsam über ihre Rolle als Mutter und Witwe hinaus. Dem Autor gelingt wirklich ein besonderes Porträt einer Frau, die im Geist ihrer Zeit versucht ihre Unabhängigkeit zu finden und zu gewinnen. Ich hatte leider etwas Schwierigkeiten mit den politischen Diskussionen, da ich über das Irland in den Sechziger zu wenig weiss. Auch an den Schreibstil muss man sich etwas gewöhnen. Mir war auch der Umgang in der Familie fremd, was aber generell dem Zeitgeist zugeschrieben werden kann. Mein Fazit: Eine Geschichte, die eher still daherkommt, über eine Frau, die versucht ihren Weg zu gehen. Wer Ahnung von Irland hat, wird diese Erzählung berühren und nachdenklich hinterlassen. 3 Sterne.
