Penniless orphan Jane Eyre begins a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester-and, Reader, she marries him. Or does she?Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
This isn’t your English teacher’s classic novel:
- A Heroine Who Sees Ghosts: Jane Eyre isn’t just a penniless orphan; she’s a magnet for the dearly departed, making her new governess job at Thornfield Hall... complicated.- A Famous Author as a Sidekick: Before she was a literary legend, Charlotte Brontë was Jane’s best friend, a wannabe detective, and an expert in all things Gothic—at least, she thinks she is.- Supernatural Comedy: A laugh-out-loud funny retelling where the ghosts are cheekier than the heroes and spectral shenanigans are around every corner.- A Very Broody Ghost Hunter: Alexander Blackwood of the Royal Society for the Relocation of Wayward Spirits is here to deal with ghosts, not fall for a governess. I can't. This book is perfect. It has my favourite kings and queens: The Tudors It has magic: E-the-uuns It has researched rewriting of the English history. It is funny. It is one of the best books I read all year. The people in the tram think I'm stupid. I laughed out loud more than once :-D Thanks Andrea for recommending it and lending it :-)

A funny and imaginative loose retelling of Jane Eyre, with some distracting flaws but absolutely charming. My favorite aspect of this book, and also the reason I bought it in the first place, was the humor and the authors addressing the audience. It was not as present in the novel as I might have thought, especially when people compare it to The Princess Bride, but it is a big enough part of the book that when the humor isn't your cup of tea it will hinder your enjoyment of the book immensely. The funny exchanges and comments were what kept me reading at first, since when the story was told straight, in the beginning I felt it wasn't particularly strong and strayed too much from the actual Jane Eyre plot. However, I felt like it improved over time and I kept noticing little details that I really enjoyed. Especially the love story (no, not Jane's and Rochester's) worked well for me since there is a real developement and they came to be quit cute together. While I mostly enjoyed the author's decisions, there were some thar felt kinda off and some things could have profited from being reworked. Also, some of the characters could have needed more time, e.g. I really wished we would have known Adele and Bertha better. There was also a mixtures of plot points and details that really surprised me in how well they were handled and things that were dropped to quickly or deserved a little more attention. This was far from perfect for me but still really sweet, funny and totally enjoyable. Don't go into it with wrong expectations, it is a decent book written for teenage readers and even if you're older you might still have fun with it.

3.5 ⭐️ Because I adore Jane Eyre, I expected to prefer this book to part 1 of the Lady Janies series, but I didn't. It wasn't as funny, the ghost-part not as compelling as the shapeshifting of book 1 and the idea of including Charlotte Bronte in the story (like, the author of Jane Eyre) and her existing together with her character Jane Eyre was not a choice I liked. I still had fun, just not as much as with book 1.

Actually a 4.5 I loved it the entire time and thought it might even become my favourite read of 2019, but unfortunately I didn't like the end that much. Everything felt very rushed and it was too cheesy for me....
