About the book

Move over, Charlotte Brontë. The authors of the New York Times bestselling My Lady Jane put an irreverent spin on Jane Eyre—a fantastical tale of mischief, romance, and supernatural mayhem perfect for fans of The Princess Bride or A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. You may think you know the story. Penniless orphan Jane Eyre begins a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester—and, Reader, she marries him. Or does she? Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

I can't. This book is perfect. It has my favourite kings and queens: The Tudors It has magic: E-the-uuns It has researched rewriting of the English history. It is funny. It is one of the best books I read all year. The people in the tram think I'm stupid. I laughed out loud more than once :-D Thanks Andrea for recommending it and lending it :-)

A funny and imaginative loose retelling of Jane Eyre, with some distracting flaws but absolutely charming. My favorite aspect of this book, and also the reason I bought it in the first place, was the humor and the authors addressing the audience. It was not as present in the novel as I might have thought, especially when people compare it to The Princess Bride, but it is a big enough part of the book that when the humor isn't your cup of tea it will hinder your enjoyment of the book immensely. The funny exchanges and comments were what kept me reading at first, since when the story was told straight, in the beginning I felt it wasn't particularly strong and strayed too much from the actual Jane Eyre plot. However, I felt like it improved over time and I kept noticing little details that I really enjoyed. Especially the love story (no, not Jane's and Rochester's) worked well for me since there is a real developement and they came to be quit cute together. While I mostly enjoyed the author's decisions, there were some thar felt kinda off and some things could have profited from being reworked. Also, some of the characters could have needed more time, e.g. I really wished we would have known Adele and Bertha better. There was also a mixtures of plot points and details that really surprised me in how well they were handled and things that were dropped to quickly or deserved a little more attention. This was far from perfect for me but still really sweet, funny and totally enjoyable. Don't go into it with wrong expectations, it is a decent book written for teenage readers and even if you're older you might still have fun with it.
