Li Ami has always felt out of place, without family, friends, or regular magic to fit in with. The odd and eccentric daughter of a former imperial mage, Li Ami has always been surrounded by books, which she finds easier to understand than people. Exiled to the far west of the Dawn Kingdoms, Ami is the sole caregiver for her deranged father, whose outbursts aren't mere ramblings, but potential fragments of an ominous prophecy. When her father is arrested for trespassing in the village monastery and taking a branch from the sacred tree, Ami volunteers to work for the mysterious Beast in the castle, who needs someone to translate a forbidden book on magic and find a solution to the mysterious plague devastating the harvest. Meanwhile, as signs of magical corruption increase across the Dawn Kingdoms, Jin Zhara begins to feel out of place. She may have defeated a demon lord and revealed her identity as the Keeper of Fire, but the elemental battle against the mother of ten thousand demons is beyond her... unless she can find the other Keepers of the Dawn. Their magic won't be enough to overcome the rising tide of undeath, so she needs the Keeper of the Wood, who wields the power over life and death, to defeat the revenants rampaging through the lands. The threat of the mother of ten thousand demons grows greater by the day, and the tenuous peace that binds the Dawn Kingdoms together begins to unravel. Ami and Zhara must travel to the Worldroot to close a potential demonic portal and restore balance to an increasingly chaotic world.
