Little Thieves

In "Little Thieves", the protagonist is currently impersonating a princess while stealing from the surrounding noble houses to earn enough money, so she can move away and be free from her past and the influence of her godly godmothers. Raised by death and fortune in the gods' realm until she became too old to stay there, her godmothers had arranged for her to be taken in as the princess' maid, with whom she first struck up a friendship and later had a falling out with. Once Vanja became a teenager, death and fortune made her choose who she wanted to serve, and she would learn one of their trades. As a consequence, Vanja can't ask any of her godmothers for help without committing to a lifetime of servitude to either one. Things get more complicated when the fiance of the princess Vanja impersonates comes back from his conquests to finally marry her, and a prefect (junior prefect) shows up, investigating the thefts that Vanja has committed, and a forest god curses Vanja for a theft she has committed. That leaves Vanja with two weeks to break the curse, get away from the princess' fiance and not get caught. This book is a magical adventure in a world of low gods, smaller magics, and mythical creatures, which I enjoyed, and as the story progresses, we also get a bigger cast with a few interesting dynamics, both platonic and romantic, that really drew me in. I find it hard to talk about what exactly I liked about a book when I loved it as completely as I did this one, but I loved the adventure, and Vanja (and later her friends) fighting off threats to her life and her freedom and what is important to her, I loved the world in which we were thrust, I loved the characters, Vanja's personal arc, her romance arc (with demisexual representation, yay), the complicated relationship to the real princess, as well as the relationships to her godmothers. I just found so much to like and I found this so well-written (I liked "The Merciful Crow" series, but this still felt like quite an improvement), that I just cannot do anything but recommend it full-heartedly.

Das war Perfektion.

Ich habe alles geliebt. Die Story, das World Building, die Charaktere, den Schreibstil und die Protagonistin ist einfach nur 😘👌🏼 Ich ich hab erstaunlich lange für das Buch gebraucht, aus dem Grund, dass ich jedes Wort genießen und inhalieren wollte. Der Schreibstil ist großartig, die gesamte Welt fühlt sich so einzigartig an und die Interaktion zwischen den Charakteren ist grandios. Alle haben ihre Ecken und Kanten und wirken einfach so dermaßen real. Es gibt so viele unvorhergesehene Twists und Turns, gleichzeitig wird die Welt so natürlich und leicht verständlich erklärt, ohne dass man mit Informationen überschüttet wird. Tatsächlich würde ich eher sagen, dass das ein Herbst-/ Winterbuch ist, aber ich bin dennoch froh, dass es mir jetzt ausgelost wurde. Ich war vollkommen unvorbereitet und hab mich Hals über Kopf in diese Welt verliebt. Werde die Reihe definitiv weiter lesen!

Just a big HELL YES from me. The writing *chef's kiss*. The story *chef's kiss*. The character... Well you get the point right? We have a funny, witty, smart and heartwarming story of a little thieve. We have enemies to lovers slightly embroidered into the story who don't fall in love and get all cheesy and boring. No no. We have spilled tears over the fact that this is a story of neither a villain nor a hero who is misunderstood, put in positions to chose to survive over and over again in a story to find herself. Her true self. Amazing. Thank you.

Das Buch soll auf dem Märchen "Die Gänsemagd" basieren, ich kenne das Märchen aber nicht. Ich wurde so gut unterhalten. Das Buch macht einfach Spaß. Vanja, Ragne und Emeric sind großartige Charaktere.

Ich liebe Geschichten über Geschichten, und ich liebe Fairy Tale Retellings. Von daher ist es genau das Ding für mich. Funktioniert prima als Standalone, bin aber trotzdem froh schon das ARC für Painted Devils hier zu haben. :)

Ein absolut tolles Retelling des Märchens der Gänsemagd, aber aus der Sicht der "bösen" Magd. Das Märchen aus der Sicht der "bösen" Magd zu lesen, die der Prinzessin das Gesicht und damit ihr Leben stiehlt, war einmal etwas anderes, aber absolut toll. Für mich war dieses Buch eines meiner Jahreshighlights in 2021. Die Geschichte ist absolut spannend geschrieben und ich habe bis zum Ende mit gefiebert, wie es mit der Protagonistin weiter geht. Obwohl sie definitiv die "Böse" in der Geschichte ist, war sie mir, vor allem auch hinsichtlich ihrer Vorgeschichte, sehr sympathisch. Auch alle anderen Charaktere fand ich wirklich super geschrieben und ausgereift. Alles in allem wirklich eine runde Story, die ich definitiv auch noch einmal lesen werde.

Margaret Owens ‚Knochendiebin‘ war eines der Bücher, die ich abbrechen musste. Ich fand es nichtssagend, ohne Höhepunkte und die Charaktere waren mir sowas von egal. ‚Little Thieves‘ hätte ich dann wohl nie gekauft oder gelesen, wenn es nicht Monatsbuch der Illumicrate gewesen wäre. Wobei mich das Cover schon beim Reveal gecatcht hat. Dann hat aber die Story, die sich lose an dem Märchen ‚Die Gänsemagd‘ orientiert, auch noch so gut geklungen. Also nichts wie los, fast unvoreingenommen

Sie ist nicht unbedingt eine likeable Protagonistin, aber ihr trockener Humor und generell ihr Charakter waren für mich von Anfang an authentisch und so interessant. Die Geschichte an sich hat ein bisschen etwas märchenhaftes, die Art Geschichte, die eine Lektion fürs Leben lehrt. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob das so mein Fall war. Wiederrum ausgesprochen gut gefallen haben mir das sehr schön gestaltete Worldbuilding und die Fantasyelemente. Vanyas Godmothers - Death und Fortune - haben mir als Nebencharaktere der Geschichte gefallen, aber ebenso wie sie sich in die Storyline einfügen und immer wieder versuchen, Vanya an sich zu binden, das passte richtig gut. Nicht so warmgeworden bin ich mit Gisele und Emeric...die beiden sind zwar interessante Charaktere, aber ich hatte bis zum Ende nicht zu 100% das Gefühl sie greifen zu können. Bei Ragne ging es mir ähnlich... Alles in allem ein guter Einzelband, ein gutes Retelling und eine schöne Geschichte für Zwischendurch✨ . 3/5⭐ . I liked the proragonist - Vanya. She isn't the likeable sort of protagonist what's actually something I really enjoyed and her humor made me laugh too. She has been authentic through and through. The story has been something of a fairytale, this kind of story that teaches a lesson for life. Not quite my type of story. Though I enjoyed the worldbuilding and the Fantasy elements. And Vanyas godmothers - Death and Fortune - have been great side characters, maybe my favourites in the whole book - I like the storyline how they tried to bind Vanya to them. I got not close to the other characters... Gisele and Emeric were interesting but I never got really attached to them. Ragne too... All in all a good standalone, a good retelling and a nice story in between✨ . 3/5⭐

DNF it at page 226 - I was so exited when this book came with the Illumicrate box and because it was so hyped up. I waited maybe to long but as I read the positive reviews on Goodreads and bookstagram I give it a go. But no, it was nothing to me. I started this book at may 21st and in the meantime I read several books and mostly finished it by one sitting. *Le heavy sight* Don't get me wrong: I really, REALLY wanted to like this book. The book, the synopsis, the reviews and yeah, because it's a German fairytale.... I was so exited to read it. Unfortunately, that's all the excitement goes. I tried several times to get into the book but I couldn't get into it. This book is the synonym of slow pace. The writing was off. Additionally I dislike the main character of Vanya. I found myself rolling my eyes several times and yes, I think she is the first character I couldn't care less what happens with her. I maybe understand why readers like the story and book, but for me it was not.

WOW.....Just.....WOW. Thats gonna be a FAT Highlight of the year. You have to read it NOW ! Its brillant... I dont have any words for it... LIKE OMG WOWWWWW ?!?!?!

This really is a slow burn. I fairly enjoyed the story and the protagonists (both FMC and MMC) grew on me rather quickly. The romance was cute and blossomed slowly and without any extreme high tension. They did not hate each other and played no games. The romance was a sweet bonus to the story.

I‘m not in the headspace for this book at the moment, though I will come back to it eventually. At some point. Hopefully this year.

“Little Thieves” was my first book by Margarete Owen and since the blurb and the great cover appealed to me, I really wanted to read the book. I really liked the idea behind the story and it was something different.The world building was really great and the idea of a retelling was super amazing but the downside of all this was Margaret Owens writing style. From the first page on, I had some problems with her particular writing style and that meant I just couldn’t get into the book properly. For me, the book was not an easy read and therefore i couldn’t read more than a few chapters at a time. Even if I had a few problems, I really liked the plot itself. I really liked Vanja and she was my favorite Character. She was brave, she didn’t let herself get down and I liked her approach in all the tough sitiuations. I really understood her actions and decisions through the whole book. I had my problems with the other characters. Just how they treated Vanja sometimes was definitely not okay. Gisele couldn’t inspire me at all with her manner and she is the character I liked the least. Emeric Conrad … it took me a long time to warm up to him and even until the end i really don’t know what i should think about him. Whoever liked her other books will also love her new book as the plot itself was really great and exciting. But unfortunately it was not for me, because I just can’t get along with Margarete Owen’s writing style.

I thouroughly enjoyed this! The banter, the characters, the plot - this was loads of fun. I guess that's why the exaggerated ending ( Adalbrecht's transformation) was a bummer. And another thing didn't sit right with me: Since the country is called Almandy (if I remember correctlly) I guess that the "foreign terms" are derived from German. As a German, I cringed at most of the words and that really took some joy from my reading. Nevertheless, this book was hard to put down and is one of my favourite reads this year.

4,5* Vanja ist die Adoptivtochter der Göttinnen Tod und Glück. Jahrelang arbeitete sie pflichtbewusst als Dienerin von Prinzessin Gisele, bis ihr klar wurde, dass ihr niemand helfen würde, wenn nicht sie selbst. Nicht einmal auf die Liebe ihrer Mütter kann sie zählen – erwarten diese doch, dass sie entscheidet, welcher von beiden sie dienen wird. Als Prinzessin Gisele einen Prinzen aus einem anderen Land heiraten soll, stiehlt Vanja ihre verzauberten Perlen und nimmt ihren Platz ein. Eigentlich will sie, getarnt als Prinzessin, nur so viel Geld stehlen, bis sie das Land verlassen kann, doch da verflucht sie ein Gott. Sie hat nur wenige Wochen Zeit, den Fluch zu brechen und dann kommt auch noch Giseles unheimlicher Verlobter zurück… Ich muss sagen, dass ich nicht damit gerechnet hatte, dieses Buch so zu lieben, wie ich es getan habe! Alles, was ich im Vorfeld darüber wusste war, dass es eine Neuerzählung des Märchens „Die Gänsemagd“ ist und dass die Autorin wohl einen Haufen falscher deutscher Worte im Text nutzt. Ich war mir sicher, dass mich der zweite Punkt beim Lesen stören würde und das hat er auch. Es werden so viele „deutsche“ Worte verwendet und viele, wie „Prinzessin“ sind auch richtig. Einige klingen, als hätte die Autorin Deutsch mit Niederländisch gemischt und einige sind einfach schlicht falsch (wie etwa der „Wolfhunder“, der „Pfennigeist“ oder „Scheit“ als Schimpfwort). In der zweiten Hälfte nahm die Verwendung dieser Worte etwas ab, aber gerade in der ersten Hälfte fand ich dies sehr störend. Ich hätte mir hier gewünscht, dass die Autorin, wenn sie schon Worte entfremdet, dies auf eine passendere Weise getan hätte. Abgesehen davon war dies aber eine Geschichte, die mir durch und durch gefallen hat! Erzählt wurde sie aus Vanjas Sicht. Vanja ist frech und vorwitzig und dies spiegelt sich auch im Schreibstil wider. Insbesondere, wenn Vanja etwas stiehlt, oder andere Pläne ausführt, war dies ziemlich gut gemacht. Die Geschichte war lustig, hatte spannende Momente und war auch mal emotional. Ich war durchweg sehr gut unterhalten. Und dazu kam noch, dass auch tiefergehende Themen behandelt wurden. Insbesondere ging es um Klassismus, Privilegien und wie es ist, wenn man ganz unten ist. Es gab dazu einige sehr gute Gedanken und die Charaktere waren genau durch diese Thematik durchweg moralisch grau, was mir ebenfalls sehr gefallen hat. Ich hätte mir in diesem Zusammenhang allerdings gewünscht, dass ein ganz bestimmter Punkt Giselle gegenüber nicht unter den Tisch gekehrt worden wäre. Insgesamt war dies ein großartiger Auftakt zu einer Trilogie. Ich frage mich allerdings schon, worum es in den Folgebänden gehen soll, denn ehrlich gesagt las sich das Buch wie ein Einzelband. Fazit: „Little Thieves“ war ein lustiges, spannendes und emotionales Abenteuer, welches mich, trotz schlechter Verwendung von deutschen Worten, sehr gut unterhalten konnte. Das i-Tüpfelchen war jedoch eine interessante Besprechung von Privilegien und Klassismus.
