Description

Sadie wasn't looking for love until it landed on her doorstep.

After getting passed over for an overdue—and much-needed—promotion, Sadie Green is in desperate need of three things: a stiff drink, a new place to live, and a one-night stand. But when an accidental mix-up lands her on the doorstep of Jack Thomas's gorgeous Brooklyn brownstone, it's too bad Sadie is more attracted to the impressive real estate than she is to the man himself.

Jack, still grieving the unexpected death of his parents, has learned to find comfort in video games and movie marathons instead of friends. So while he doesn’t know just what to make of the vivaciously verbose Sadie, he’s willing to offer her his spare bedroom while she gets back on her feet. And with the rent unbeatably low, Sadie can finally pursue her floristry side hustle full-time. The two are polar opposites, but as Sadie’s presence begins to turn the brownstone into a home, they both start to realize they may have just made the deal of a lifetime.

This had all the ingredients for the good book – and stirred them up perfectly! Everybody go read this book! This was by far one of my favourite books of the year and I‘m gonna tell you why. (This contains spoilers, but people need to know how wonderful this book is, so read with care!) The characters. Let‘s start with Sadie and Jack. Sadie, the quirky ex-finance worker (relatable, not the ex tho), who loves flowers (also relatable) dreams big of opening her own flower shop. Talking only the lowest of herself (did we talk about relating?) because of her past and getting thrown in with a total stranger because of a drunk mishap with a roommate-looking app. Which brings us to Jack. The at first introvert owner of a fabulous brownstone, who let‘s Sadie move in with him and over time becomes the perfect boyfriend to Sadie. The crew – Harley, Gemma and Nick. Who doesn’t dream of a group of friends like these guys? They are so supporting and loving towards Sadie and later of course also Jack, it is the literal dream. The setting. Sadie and Jack living in Jack‘s brownstone, which over time more and more becomes the perfect spot for all needs. A big kitchen for family festivities. A basement with everything gamer boys could dream of and the perfect place for long movie nights. The upstairs, where there can fit a whole flower shop studio in and where‘s also enough space for Jack to start painting again. And the flower shop Sadie opens. Only from reading about it, I can imagine what a cozy and beautiful place it must be. The story itself. Slow-burn at its best. Everything just goes at the perfect pace and Sadie and Jack coming slowly together happens in exactly the right steps. I loved how everything fell into place. Which brings me to my last thing. The writing. The writing style was so smooth and easy to follow, you could just flow through the words. Text convos thrown in every now and then helped let everything flow. Summed up, this book had everything I want a book to have. It was such a cozy read and I really devoured it and couldn’t set it aside. I‘m really looking forward to Falon Ballard‘s next novel and hope for it to be just as good as this one!

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for the advanced copy for review. All opinions are my own. I really loved the story of this book. The slow burn was excellent, but the main character's personal growth was really lacking. It happened way too late in the book and it felt like it was a "tada, I'm doing better" type of reveal. It was still a great book! I just wish that it would have come earlier and shown more of her actual growth other than just in her professional life.
