Niemals hätte ich erwartet, dass dies mein 2. Highlight 2025 werden würde - aber es war so. Vaishnavi Patel hat hier ein großartiges Retelling abgeliefert und uns die Geschichte einer Frau aus dem indischen Nationalepos, dem Ramayana, erzählt. Kaikeyi wird Ramas Stiefmutter sein, aber hier beginnt nicht unsere Geschichte. Sie beginnt, als Kaikeyi ein Teenager ist. Sie ist eine Prinzessin und einziges Mädchen unter männlichen Geschwistern. Ihre Welt ändert sich als ihr unnahbarer Vater ihre Mutter vom Hofe jagt. Kaikeyis Platz in dieser Welt ist der vieler Frauen. Sie wird jung verheiratet als dritte Frau eines Rajas... Bis zu diesem Punkt war die Geschichte zwar interessant, wirkte jedoch vorhersehbar. Aber dann erlebte ich hier etwas völlig Unerwartetes: Wir sehen eine Geschichte über Liebe, Freundschaft, auch der Freundschaft unter Frauen, wir sehen Respekt und Loyalität in der Ehe, wir sehen Mutterliebe und weibliche Durchsetzungskraft. Und wir sehen eine Magie, die auf zwischenmenschlichen Bindungen basiert. Das hat mich umgehauen. Dachte ich doch, es sei nur ein weiterer feministischer Aufschrei der immer gleichen Bauart. Dynamik kommt ins Spiel durch Intrigen, Ränke, religiöse Überzeugungen von außen, die das Glück der Familie und auch Kaikeyis an den Rand des Zerreissens bringt. Kaikeyi ist ein langsam erzähltes, charakterzentriertes Buch für das ihr Euch Zeit nehmen solltet. Leider gibt es bis heute keine Übersetzung. Das Englisch ist jedoch sehr gut zu verstehen.

Meine Kenntnisse des mythischen Stoffes dahinter waren erst nicht existent, dann habe ich 2-3 Wikipedia Einträge gelesen. Das hat geholfen wäre aber nicht nötig gewesen umder Geschichte zu folgen. Es ist wie Circe von Madeline Miller: ein feministisches Retelling, das an sich genommen eine gute Geschichte und rund ist. Kennt man sich ein bisschen aus, wird es umso empowernder und feministischer! Kaikeyi ist "die böse" in Ramas Geschichte, der Geschichte eines Gottes mit Mission für das Gute. Wer kennt sie nicht, die selbstgefälligen Männer, die schon gottgegeben alles richtig machen und auf niemanden hören, schon gar keine Frau? Aber hier schreibt Kaikeyi ihre eigene Geschichte. Angefangen in ihrer Kindheit und mit der Verbannung ihrer Mutter lernt man viel über die Zeit, die Gepflogenheiten - und wie sie in kleinem Rahmen dagegen auf begehrt. Dazu kommt eine magische Fähigkeit, die spannend ist und im Kontext des göttlichen durchaus Sinn ergibt ohne ins Phantastische zu driften. Man folgt kaikeyi in die Ehe (notgedrungen, sie sieht die Pflicht zwar ein und ihren Ehemann später als Freund, empfindet aber weder romantische Liebe noch Anziehung) und später zur Geburt der Söhne. Und während ich dank Wikipedia wusste, was die Mythen später über sie erzählen würden und was passieren musste, war es doch eine freie aber passende Interpretation der Sage. Es hat mir das Herz gebrochen und mich später wieder versöhnt und war ein echtes Highlight. Auf jeden Fall große Empfehlung!
I fell absolutely in love with this!
If you like mythological retellings or strong female characters or stories about family or Gods that meddle in the mortal world... then this book is for you! I'm not the biggest fan of mythological retellings, but I absolutely love to dive headfirst into mythologies or other traditional stories that are from cultures not my own. I like to learn, and at the same time I get a different way of telling stories as well as unexpected twists and turns. I liked Kaikeyi a lot and it was easy to see the world through her eyes while still being aware of her flaws. Her fight for making her own choices and for better treatment of women was infuriating and satisfying and heartwarming to watch. The love - within the family or between close friends - practically oozes out of the book. Which makes it all the harder to read when the Gods put their wedges in... It's an amazing story that's definitely still relevant today and absolutely worth the read!
