For academic writing, it is relatively light and well-researched. But it is a heavy topic with a lot of facts. The underlying message is also consistent across the chapters and can become demoralizing. We enjoyed discussing which things we recognized from our own lives and which things we learned. Topics covered a wide range: from the mobility and transport planning, to the trope/necessity of "angry (black) women", how bias is often an absence of something rather than active malicious thoughts, and what we can do about at a time when things feel so bleak (build on your inner circle, keep on having critical conversations, empower others around you when you can). We also learned it's important to ask which gender the mice had in a biology study!
In rund 300 Seiten gibt Caroline Criado Perez einen Rundumschlag über die diversen Arten, wie sich die Diskriminierung der Frau in unserer heutigen Gesellschaft äußert. Das tut sie mit Witz und forschungsbasierten Erläuterungen. Das Buch zeigt die diversen Auswirkungen der Gender Data Gap und ich fand mich beim Lesen so oft nur kopfschüttelnd und ungläubig wieder. Vor dem Lesen war mir schon klar, dass wir auch in Ländern wie Deutschland noch keine Gleichstellung von Mann und Frau vorfinden. Wie weit wir aber von einer wirklichen Gleichstellung selbst in den ‚reichen‘ Ländern sind, war mir nicht bewusst. Perez räumt mit Herangehensweisen wie ‚dann muss Frau halt ein bisschen mehr sein wie Mann‘ auf, zeigt, welche Vorteile eine gleichgestellte Gesellschaft für alle Beteiligten, auch die Männer, hätte und wie wichtig die Bereinigung der Gender Data Gap ist. Dieses Buch war für mich stellenweise schwere Kost und es dauerte seine Zeit, bis ich es abgeschlossen hatte. Trotz dessen bin ich begeistert davon, wie umfassend Perez damit aufklärt und zum Nachdenken anregt. Eine große Empfehlung!

Invisible women sollte eine Pflichtlektüre sein, vor allem für alle Männer! Perez erklärt interessant, verständlich und wissenschaftlich sauber belegt die schockierende gesellschaftliche Tiefe der "Unsichtbarkeit" der Frau und der allgegenwärtigen Diskriminierung. Sie wählt spannende Beispiele aus der ganzen Welt und liefert durchaus überraschende Fakten wie 'Kann Sch eeschieben sexistisch sein? und immer wenn man denkt, naja gut zumindest hier hat man als Frau keinen Nachteil, legt sie mit wissenschaftlichen Fakten Gegenargumente dar. Fakten, die frau kennen sollte (und mann auch) und die leider aktueller nicht sein könnten. Manchmal tut es weh, aber es leider zu wahr, um die Augen zu verschließen. Es sind definitiv nicht einfach Schuldzuweisungen, sondern in jeden Kapitel werden Verbindungen verständlich gemacht, Ursachen der Probleme ergründet und miteinander verknüpft. Eine große Leseempfehlung, die euren Blickwinkel auf die Welt verändern wird!
In "Invisible Women" Caroline Criado Pérez compiles plenty of ways in which the way data is collected does not include women at all or fails to account for the ways in which women's experiences differ from men's, and the practical influences on our day to day life this has. The book was very informative, sometimes shocking, sometimes making me feel "disappointed but not surprised", and overall drawing a picture that shows just how much things still have to change for us to reach gender equality. "Invisible Women" is well-researched (and well-documented through footnotes), and interestingly written so that it does not read dry. The only thing that bothered me was that the difference between sex and gender wasn't always quite clear. Despite the author saying in the beginning that she'd mostly refer to gender, as that's what's making the difference, she talked overwhelmingly about sex in the book, and I would've wished to get an explanation of why in these cases the choice was made, or if it was purely because the data was collected based on sex and not on gender (which is likely, considering current stances on trans and intersex issues). Overall, a book I can and will recommend.
This book is a mountain. And it can bury you, if you let it. So I took it on step by step. Half a chapter at a time, collecting notes, comparing them with a friend and giving me space and time between all the facts and gained insights that flooded me every time. It's actual work, reading this book - but it's not only worth it, it's more than necessary.

Spannende und erhellende bis schockierende Fakten aufschlussreich zusammengestellt. Leider sehr binär, was teilweise an den Daten liegt. Allerdings ist die Autorin wohl Trans-feindlich und hat auch keine Infos zur Binäritat der Daten ins Buch aufgenommen.
This book has a few layers for me: Firstly, I loved the information packed first two hundred pages, then I got bored by the repetitiveness. A lot of great statistics and numbers are introduced here but sadly, there is also a lot of ignorance promoted. This book is not acknowledging the racial component of sexism while also blatantly dismissing gender issues. Everything is about straight cis-gender woman and everyone else doesn't exist. This book is perfect terf material and it pains me a lot because it could have been a great piece of information for every feminist instead of potential fuel for hate and selective activism. If you do decide to read, do so with caution and attentiveness, borrow don't buy and don't end your feminist research here.

Ich habe exakt einen kleinen Makel an diesem Buch: Manchmal ist es mir doch zu fokussiert auf bio-essenzielle Gedankengänge. Trotzdem ist das Buch ein unglaublich wichtiger Einstieg für Neulinge im Feminismus und der systematischen Unterdrückung von Frauen.
DNF @ 40% I really enjoyed this in the first couple of chapters but soon I found the writing to be extremely dry. While improtant things are said, it just isn't a good reading experience. I also started to notice how a book about data gaps wasn't acknowledging and actively ignoring the problems trans people face because of these data gaps. The language used was also almost borderline exclusive and derogatory. I wasn't the only one who noticed that and multiple people have pointed this out well Example Furthermore I realized how qoutes and discussions of this book often gather TERFs and like-minded people. All together that just made me uncomfortable in a "once you see it, you can't unsee it" kinda way. While I do think that this book says important things, I just didn't feel great reading it.
Sehr wichtige Thematik und Informationen, aber mir zu provokant umgesetzt. Zunächst zum Positiven: Das Werk ist inhaltlich hochinteressant und wirkt durch die Vielzahl der Studien, die mit ausführlicher Quellenangabe zitiert und präsentiert werden, wissenschaftlich fundiert. Ich habe durchaus einige Dinge durch das Werk gelernt und für mein Allgemeinwissen oder etwaige Diskussionen mitnehmen können. Woran ich m ich aber sehr schwer tat, ist die befangene Haltung der Verfasserin, die gefühlt überall eine Diskriminierung von Frauen sehen will und ihr provokanter Schreibstil. Sie hat mich da wirklch regelmäßig beim Lesen fast zur Weißglut getrieben. Sie fasst den Begriff der Diskriminierung sehr weit. Auch an Situationen, die eher zufällig eher Frauen als Männer treffen und in denen nicht einmal eine Diskriminierung intendiert ist, sieht sie himmelschreiende Ungerechtigkeiten, die sie vor allem deshalb stören, weil Frauen davon betroffen sind (die Mäner, die in der selben SItuation stecken, scheint sie zu vernachlässigen bzw. sind ihr einfach nicht so wichtig). Auch zieht sie häufig Schlüsse, bei denen ich einfach den Eindruck habe, dass sie gewisse weitere Aspekte (zB kulturelle Unterschiede) gezielt zu ihrem Argumentationszweck vernachlässigt, die aus meiner Sicht aber durchaus relevant sind. Von dem Verhalten oder einer Studie in einem Land ohne Weiteres auf die universelle Übertragbarkeit deren Ergebnisses auf alle Länder der Welt zu schließen, wie es teilweise scheint, finde ich schon ein starkes Stück. Fazit: Leseempfehlung wegen der Informationen und weil das Werk zum Nachdenken anregt, aber nicht wegen der Darstellung
If you are not angry you are not paying attention. A quote that fits pretty well for this topic. This book focuses about statistics and data collections and how they mistread women as abnormal because men are the "normal" humans and standards. Women are either ignored or left out or just included under the men. And this does lead to a catch-22 situation, because no budgets are granted for studies or developments if not enough data proves that it is worth it - but without the budgets no data can be created. I already knew a lot of these things but not the actuals numbers and scales. And it is making me really angry to read about how half of the world population is treated as a minority and not cared for. And this is not "just" some discriminations in jobs, this is also about health care - women are dying because people don't see the need to focus on something else then the male-standard. I know this book was criticised on not including trans women and not giving room for minorities. I don't know if the author did this because she didn't have this in her mind,but I also can imagine that if there is so little data on women in generell, I bet there is almost none about eg trans women. But that is just my assumption, I don't know the intention of the author on why she didn't include this. For me this was still a good book, very focused on numbers and facts, but still interesting and eye-opening.
In Invisible Women schreibt die Autorin Caroline Criado Perez über den Gender Data Gap, dass heisst darüber, dass in vielen Datenerhebungen (z.B. in der Medizin, aber auch in der Wirtschaft und vielen weiteren Orten) nur Daten von Männern erhoben werden oder zumindest das Geschlecht nicht beachtet wird. Obschon ich einige der Beispiele die in dem Buch behandelt werden schon kannte, zeigt es doch eindrücklich auf, welche Konsequenzen es hat, die Hälfte der Menschheit nicht zu berücksichtigen und einfach den Mann als Standard zu sehen. Ich habe das englische Hörbuch gehört. Dieses wird von der Autorin selbst gelesen und ich kann es nur empfehlen.
I finished „Invisible Women“ by Caroline Criado Perez today. It is a very shocking book and I was not able to read it in one go as I had to put it down to first digest what I‘ve learned in every chapter before continuing to the next. The contents of this book are extremely relevant and important but it is most certainly not an easy read. Nevertheless I think EVERYBODY should read it as it shows how far away we REALLY are from gender equality which, as a woman, breaks my heart to realize how many areas in life this refers to and how easy it could be fixed if we would simply change our ways of thinking!
It's interesting how I've never acticely thought about all the big and small injustices women are confronted with on a daily basis - it was a "well that's the way it apparently is" kind of thinking. What I loved most apart from raising my awareness for this topic is how well written and researched this book is (with a hundred pages of sources in the end). Even though it's repetitive and obvious in some parts I still couldn't stop reading. Bear in mind that the repetitiveness is just another reminder about how the same pattern in male default thinking has brought us to where we are today - with prescription meds not working for women or even having deadly side effects, female police agents dying from ill-fitting security vests and women doing the majority of care work worldwide but never being paid or even acknowledged for that (take the GDP where this work has no impact at all). To mention but a few of the topics raised in this book. If you are looking to educate yourself about data bias or gender inequalities or maybe even about the reason our world is designed the way it is today you should definitely grab that book. Or if you're just kind of curious. And please please please don't refrain from reading it because you're a man.
Sehr gute Sammlung an Statistiken, ich kann das Buch jeder Person empfehlen, einfach um auch inspiration dafür zu bekommen wie man Probleme auf unsexistische Weise angeht. Ich denke nur, dass es was bestimmte Diskussionen angeht, eher besser ist den Punkt hervorzuheben das alle Menschen sehr ähnliche kognitive Fähigkeiten haben, was von bestimmten Bewegungen nicht anerkannt wird. Ich würde behaupten, dass die Informationen im Buch auch von gerade sexistisch denkenden Menschen zur Stützung ihrer Argumente genutzt werden könnte, obwohl das Buch auch selbst dagegen aufsteht, schon durch die Denker*innen die zitiert werden. Aber es ist anzunehmen, dass nicht viele Leute, die das Patriarchat aufrecht erhalten wollen, sich überhaupt das Buch durchlesen, weshalb ich das auch gar nicht zum Vorwurf machen wollen. Wie schon gesagt, am Ende besteht meine Empfehlung für jeden, sich durch die vielleicht an manchen Stellen sehr informationsdichten Seiten zu arbeiten, es wird niemanden dümmer machen.
Für dieses Buch habe ich mir wirklich einige Monate Zeit genommen, vor allem wegen der hohen Informationsdichte, aber auch, um nicht in Resignation und unproduktive Wut abzudriften; dieses Buch sollte wirklich jede*r lesen, weil es einfach anhand von fundierten Fakten zeigt, wie tief sitzend Ungleichheit ist. "in a world designed for men" heißt es im Untertitel, und so reißerisch das klingt, so unemotional faktisch zeigt Caroline Criado Perez auf, dass unsere Welt in jeglichen Bereichen "den Mann" als default, als status quo sieht, während alle anderen Personen als quasi von der Norm abweichende Menschen angesehen werden. Das beginnt bei in der Öffentlichkeit einigermaßen bewussten Bereichen wie der Gefahr, von Gewalt betroffen zu sein oder in finanzielle Notlage zu geraten, reicht jedoch bis in ganz tiefe strukturelle Themen wie dem Design von Smartphones, Autos, ja ganzen Städten. Es ist unfassbar schwer, dieses geballte Wissen hier zusammenzufassen, gleichzeitig würde ich gerne jeden einzelnen dieser Punkte deutlich machen, weil wir dadurch ganz ohne Schuldzuweisungen, ohne die Feminist*innen gerne vorgeworfene Emotionalität (die trotzdem wichtig und richtig ist!) verstehen lernen, wo überall Benachteiligung herrscht und dass es noch viele, viele Schritte braucht, bis Frauen* in dieser Welt gleichgestellt sind. Für mich kommt dieses Buch einer Feminismus-Grundlagen-Bibel gleich, gleichzeitig sehe ich aber auch (und das ist vielleicht mein einziger Kritikpunkt), dass die sehr wissenschaftliche Art mit vielen vielen Quellen und side-notes nicht für alle zugänglich ist. Trotzdem ist das hier eine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung; wenn ihr die Frage "Warum brauchen wir Feminismus überhaupt noch?" stellt und ernsthaft eine Antwort darauf wollt, lest dieses Buch. Wenn ihr euch regelmäßig denkt "Frauen stellen sich wirklich an, sie haben doch schon so viel mehr Rechte als noch vor garnicht allzu langer Zeit", lest dieses Buch. Wenn ihr das Gefühl habt, bisher nur an der Oberfläche der Ungleichheit gekratzt zu haben und wirklich verstehen wollt, lest dieses Buch, und vor allem, wenn ihr Fakten an der Hand haben wollt, die ihr in der nächsten (provokativen) Diskussion raushauen wollt, dann lest dieses Buch. Seid nur gefasst darauf, stellenweise sehr wütend zu werden, und vergesst nicht, dass Wur produktiv sein kann, wenn man sie richtig nutzt.
As a data enthusiast, this book was exactly the right read for me. So many numbers, studies and correlating research refute flimsy arguments that feminism does not concern us all and that it is only about the sensitivities of individual women. It is a system. Always has been. We can not make decisions based on flawed data.

If you are not angry you are not paying attention. A quote that fits pretty well for this topic. This book focuses about statistics and data collections and how they mistread women as abnormal because men are the "normal" humans and standards. Women are either ignored or left out or just included under the men. And this does lead to a catch-22 situation, because no budgets are granted for studies or developments if not enough data proves that it is worth it - but without the budgets no data can be created. I already knew a lot of these things but not the actuals numbers and scales. And it is making me really angry to read about how half of the world population is treated as a minority and not cared for. And this is not "just" some discriminations in jobs, this is also about health care - women are dying because people don't see the need to focus on something else then the male-standard. I know this book was criticised on not including trans women and not giving room for minorities. I don't know if the author did this because she didn't have this in her mind,but I also can imagine that if there is so little data on women in generell, I bet there is almost none about eg trans women. But that is just my assumption, I don't know the intention of the author on why she didn't include this. For me this was still a good book, very focused on numbers and facts, but still interesting and eye-opening.
In Invisible Women schreibt die Autorin Caroline Criado Perez über den Gender Data Gap, dass heisst darüber, dass in vielen Datenerhebungen (z.B. in der Medizin, aber auch in der Wirtschaft und vielen weiteren Orten) nur Daten von Männern erhoben werden oder zumindest das Geschlecht nicht beachtet wird. Obschon ich einige der Beispiele die in dem Buch behandelt werden schon kannte, zeigt es doch eindrücklich auf, welche Konsequenzen es hat, die Hälfte der Menschheit nicht zu berücksichtigen und einfach den Mann als Standard zu sehen. Ich habe das englische Hörbuch gehört. Dieses wird von der Autorin selbst gelesen und ich kann es nur empfehlen.
I finished „Invisible Women“ by Caroline Criado Perez today. It is a very shocking book and I was not able to read it in one go as I had to put it down to first digest what I‘ve learned in every chapter before continuing to the next. The contents of this book are extremely relevant and important but it is most certainly not an easy read. Nevertheless I think EVERYBODY should read it as it shows how far away we REALLY are from gender equality which, as a woman, breaks my heart to realize how many areas in life this refers to and how easy it could be fixed if we would simply change our ways of thinking!
It's interesting how I've never acticely thought about all the big and small injustices women are confronted with on a daily basis - it was a "well that's the way it apparently is" kind of thinking. What I loved most apart from raising my awareness for this topic is how well written and researched this book is (with a hundred pages of sources in the end). Even though it's repetitive and obvious in some parts I still couldn't stop reading. Bear in mind that the repetitiveness is just another reminder about how the same pattern in male default thinking has brought us to where we are today - with prescription meds not working for women or even having deadly side effects, female police agents dying from ill-fitting security vests and women doing the majority of care work worldwide but never being paid or even acknowledged for that (take the GDP where this work has no impact at all). To mention but a few of the topics raised in this book. If you are looking to educate yourself about data bias or gender inequalities or maybe even about the reason our world is designed the way it is today you should definitely grab that book. Or if you're just kind of curious. And please please please don't refrain from reading it because you're a man.
Sehr gute Sammlung an Statistiken, ich kann das Buch jeder Person empfehlen, einfach um auch inspiration dafür zu bekommen wie man Probleme auf unsexistische Weise angeht. Ich denke nur, dass es was bestimmte Diskussionen angeht, eher besser ist den Punkt hervorzuheben das alle Menschen sehr ähnliche kognitive Fähigkeiten haben, was von bestimmten Bewegungen nicht anerkannt wird. Ich würde behaupten, dass die Informationen im Buch auch von gerade sexistisch denkenden Menschen zur Stützung ihrer Argumente genutzt werden könnte, obwohl das Buch auch selbst dagegen aufsteht, schon durch die Denker*innen die zitiert werden. Aber es ist anzunehmen, dass nicht viele Leute, die das Patriarchat aufrecht erhalten wollen, sich überhaupt das Buch durchlesen, weshalb ich das auch gar nicht zum Vorwurf machen wollen. Wie schon gesagt, am Ende besteht meine Empfehlung für jeden, sich durch die vielleicht an manchen Stellen sehr informationsdichten Seiten zu arbeiten, es wird niemanden dümmer machen.
Für dieses Buch habe ich mir wirklich einige Monate Zeit genommen, vor allem wegen der hohen Informationsdichte, aber auch, um nicht in Resignation und unproduktive Wut abzudriften; dieses Buch sollte wirklich jede*r lesen, weil es einfach anhand von fundierten Fakten zeigt, wie tief sitzend Ungleichheit ist. "in a world designed for men" heißt es im Untertitel, und so reißerisch das klingt, so unemotional faktisch zeigt Caroline Criado Perez auf, dass unsere Welt in jeglichen Bereichen "den Mann" als default, als status quo sieht, während alle anderen Personen als quasi von der Norm abweichende Menschen angesehen werden. Das beginnt bei in der Öffentlichkeit einigermaßen bewussten Bereichen wie der Gefahr, von Gewalt betroffen zu sein oder in finanzielle Notlage zu geraten, reicht jedoch bis in ganz tiefe strukturelle Themen wie dem Design von Smartphones, Autos, ja ganzen Städten. Es ist unfassbar schwer, dieses geballte Wissen hier zusammenzufassen, gleichzeitig würde ich gerne jeden einzelnen dieser Punkte deutlich machen, weil wir dadurch ganz ohne Schuldzuweisungen, ohne die Feminist*innen gerne vorgeworfene Emotionalität (die trotzdem wichtig und richtig ist!) verstehen lernen, wo überall Benachteiligung herrscht und dass es noch viele, viele Schritte braucht, bis Frauen* in dieser Welt gleichgestellt sind. Für mich kommt dieses Buch einer Feminismus-Grundlagen-Bibel gleich, gleichzeitig sehe ich aber auch (und das ist vielleicht mein einziger Kritikpunkt), dass die sehr wissenschaftliche Art mit vielen vielen Quellen und side-notes nicht für alle zugänglich ist. Trotzdem ist das hier eine uneingeschränkte Empfehlung; wenn ihr die Frage "Warum brauchen wir Feminismus überhaupt noch?" stellt und ernsthaft eine Antwort darauf wollt, lest dieses Buch. Wenn ihr euch regelmäßig denkt "Frauen stellen sich wirklich an, sie haben doch schon so viel mehr Rechte als noch vor garnicht allzu langer Zeit", lest dieses Buch. Wenn ihr das Gefühl habt, bisher nur an der Oberfläche der Ungleichheit gekratzt zu haben und wirklich verstehen wollt, lest dieses Buch, und vor allem, wenn ihr Fakten an der Hand haben wollt, die ihr in der nächsten (provokativen) Diskussion raushauen wollt, dann lest dieses Buch. Seid nur gefasst darauf, stellenweise sehr wütend zu werden, und vergesst nicht, dass Wur produktiv sein kann, wenn man sie richtig nutzt.
As a data enthusiast, this book was exactly the right read for me. So many numbers, studies and correlating research refute flimsy arguments that feminism does not concern us all and that it is only about the sensitivities of individual women. It is a system. Always has been. We can not make decisions based on flawed data.
