Moshfegh is our Flannery O'Connor, and Homesick for Another World is her Everything That Rises Must Converge or A Good Man is Hard to Find. The flesh is weak; the timber is crooked; people are cruel to each other, and stupid, and hurtful. But beauty comes from strange sources. And the dark energy surging through these stories is powerfully invigorating. We're in the hands of an author with a big mind, a big heart, blazing chops, and a political acuity that is needle-sharp. Kein Buch für mich, trotzdem fertig gelesen
Ich liebe Kurzgeschichten und Erzählbände. Moshfeghs Heimweh nach einer anderen Welt war aber nicht nach meinem Geschmack. Die Motive, die sich durch das Buch spannten (Schwarz-weiss-TV, schlechte Zähne, Giftbeeren, Akne etc.) waren sehr schwach und in meinen Augen eher forciert, um der Sammlung einen Schein eines übergeordneten Zusammenhalts zu geben. Bei einigen Geschichten hatte ich das Gefühl, dass es besser gewesen wäre, man hätte den Schlussstrich früher gezogen (Der Beach Boy) andere waren für mich einfach komplett unzugänglich, sei es wegen Sprache, Thematik oder sonst was. Die vielen Referenzen zu USAmerikanischer Pop-Culture waren auch too much für mich Drogenmotiv kam mir sehr überrissen vor. Die dunkle, kurvenreiche Strasse war ganz gut, die Geschichte kanne ich aber auch schon vom New Yorker. Ich wollte es gerne haben, desswegen hab ichs auch zu Ende gelesen, aber es wollte nun mal nicht sein.
2,5 sterne. Wie Ottessa Moshfegh die Charaktere einerseits so unsympathisch und gleichzeitig so mitfühlbar darstellt ist einfach genial. Viele der angesprochenen Personen waren zwar so seltsam und eklig dass ich an manchen Stellen angewiedert von dem Buch war aber auch unbedingt wissen wollte wie die Geschichte ausgeht. Ich muss leider sagen dass viele der Geschichten nicht meinen Geschmack getroffen haben. Aber der Schreibstil der Autorin ist so fesselnd und einzigartig dass es mir nicht schwergefallen ist jede Geschichte zu lesen.
I absolutely devoured this book in a single weekend. the stories are weird, cruel, disgusting. at times it felt like ottessa moshfegh rolled a dice or spun a wheel to decide what kind of combination of character traits or strange behaviors or kinks her characters have. and I love her for that. rarely have I ever been this immersed in a book, let alone a short story collection.
