Following Footsteps

J. Jefferson Farjeon's Following Footsteps is a crime-romance melodrama that follows idealistic artist John Trestle after he encounters a forlorn young pickpocket. Lying to a policeman to keep her out of trouble, he soon learns that Mary is part of a vicious gang of criminals who will stop at nothing to keep her in the fold. Trestle's attempts to help her escape are complicated by his engagement to Lady Beatrice, but his conscience will not allow him to abandon Mary to her fate. An escape to the continent leads to the Swiss Alps, but the criminal footsteps are following ever closer . . .
