At the heart of Catch-22 resides the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero endlessly inventive in his schemes to save his skin from the horrible chances of war. His efforts are perfectly understandable because as he furiously scrambles, thousands of people he hasn't even met are trying to kill him. His problem is Colonel Cathcart, who keeps raising the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempts to excuse himself from the perilous missions that he is committed to flying, he is trapped by the Great Loyalty Oath Crusade, the hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule from which the book takes its title: a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes the necessary formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.
Catch-22 is a microcosm of the twentieth-century world as it might look to some one dangerously sane -- a masterpiece of our time.

Dieses Buch wollte ich seit Jahren schon lesen. Jetzt hat es endlich geklappt. Ich wusste gar nicht, was mich erwarten würde, da ich einfach ein Verlagen in mir gespürt hatte, dass ich dieses Buch lesen will. Worum es geht? Keine Ahnung. Also liess ich mich auf das Abenteuer ein und ich glaube, ich bin mit genau der richtigen Einstellung an dieses Werk herangegangen. Denn "Catch 22" ist anders, speziell, eigensinnig. Genau wie sein Held. Normalerweise sind Bücher, die den Krieg thematisieren ernst, traurig, düster, manchmal rasant, aber humorvoll? Ironisch? Überdreht? Hatte ich bisher noch nie, schon gar nicht, wenn es sich um den Zweiten Weltkrieg handelte. Heller dreht hier alles bis zur Spitze auf und führt uns allen die Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges, des Blutvergiessens und hierarchischer Strukturen vor Augen. Die Charaktere sind ebenfalls überspitzt, allen voran Yossarian und Milo. Aber auch der Arzt und die Vorgesetzten kommen auf irrwitzige Ideen. Man kommt nicht umhin, zu lachen. Obwohl es um Krieg geht. Genau weil es um Krieg geht, oder sogar um DEN Krieg. "Catch 22" ist unvergesslich und kommt wie ein Hammer daher. Ich habe nicht zu viel erwartet, das steht fest.
I love period pieces, so I was excited to start this book, seeing as it's a classic for whatever reason. I read classics as a child and a lot of heavy type reading as a teen, but this was just messy, and I didn't even care if it would get better when it was not even bearable in the beginning to endure the book till it might get better. I felt lost, and everything was jumbled.

Ein großartiger Roman über die Absurdität des Krieges. Beginnt als eine Komödie á la Monty Python bis der Krieg sich langsam aber sicher einschleicht. Unheimlich witzig, aber nie flach gehalten. Wer mit dem eigenen Verhältnis zur Tatsache des Krieges hadert sollte dieses Buch lesen.
