The Summer Book von Tove Jansson handelt von einem jungen Mädchen namens Sophia und ihrer Grossmutter und erzählt in etwa zwanzig kurzen Geschichten von einem Sommer den die beiden zusammen mit Sophias Vater auf einer kleinen Insel verbringen. Oberflächlich geschieht eigentlich in dem ganzen Buch nicht besonders viel. Die Geschichten erzählen von verschiedenen Ereignissen, die jedoch nicht direkt zusammenhängen, und bieten einen Einblick in das Leben von Sophia und ihrer Grossmutter in diesem Sommer. Doch in jeder Geschichte merkt man, dass es noch um mehr geht als es oberflächlich scheint. Man lernt dabei Sophia und ihre Grossmutter im Verlauf der Geschichte immer besser kennen und lernt, dass beide einiges haben dass sie beschäftigt auch wenn sie nie direkt darüber sprechen. Das Buch ist echt toll geschrieben, es kann auf einer Seite richtig lustig und schon auf der nächsten total traurig sein. Das Buch hat eine echt tolle Atmosphäre und so konnte ich richtig im Buch versinken und fühlte mich als wäre ich zusammen mit Sophia und der Grossmutter auf der Insel. Am meisten hat mir jedoch die Beziehung von Sophia und ihrer Grossmutter gefallen auch wenn die beiden an so unterschiedlichen Punkten in ihrem Leben sind, scheinen sie einander zu verstehen und füreinander da zu sein.
I have been graced with a full Moomin comic collection as a gift - a true blessing. But beyond that, I hadn't read any of Tove Jansson's additional work. Thankfully, that changed, since my roommate at CoLang 2024 brought this as one of her dozen books that she left out on the table. I'll definitely be rereading this again at some point, though. Magical and whimsical are the first two words that come to mind after having read this. Sure, there are some more serious discussions and themes intertwined here, but this is the perfect book to read during the summer. The lightness and playfulness mixed with the sharp and sometimes rude dialogue make an interesting mix, making me an even bigger Jansson fan.
