About the book

The fifth book in the Kay Scarpetta series, from No. 1 bestselling author Patricia Cornwell - now an original series on Prime Video
'America's most chilling writer of crime fiction' The Times

The Body Farm - a research institute that tests the decomposition of corpses.

Black Mountain, North Carolina: a sleepy little town where the local police deal with one homicide a year, if they're unlucky, and where people are still getting used to the idea of locking their doors at night.

But violent death is no respecter of venue, and the discovery of the corpse of the corpse of an 11-year-old girl sends shock waves through the community. Dr Kay Scarpetta, Chief medical Examiner on a similar case in Virginia, is called in to apply her forensic skills to this latest atrocity, but the apparent simplicity of the case proves something of a poisoned chalice - until Scarpetta finds enlightenment through the curious pathologists' playground known as the Body Farm . . .

The next book in the Scarpetta series is From Potter's Field. And don't miss True Crime, Patricia Cornwell's jaw-dropping memoir - available now.

    Detailreiche forensische Beschreibungen

Empfehlenswert!

It was only when I logged it on Goodreads when I realized this isn’t a stand alone book. I’ll probably get into the first few and some of the later ones as well, because this book made me want to learn a bit more about the characters (especially Lucy’s) background. BUT you can also read it without having read the first ones which is a big plus, because I obviously don’t own them (yet). At first I was a bit torn between giving 3 or 4 stars I’d want to give it 3 stars for being mostly predictable, but also want to give it 4 stars because Mrs Cornwell still managed to write it interesting enough to not put it down. I think if I can already tell who the murderer is pretty early in the book -which might also be due to me mostly reading thrillers?- but it’s still hard for me to put the book down, that says a lot about the book. I also liked most of these characters and if I didn’t like them, I kinda liked how much I disliked them. My favorite part was the name-giving part, when Dr. Scarpetta FINALLY went to a body farm. The title was one of the main reasons as to why I wanted to read the book. Just to find out it gets mentioned like twice and then they give it a teeny tiny chapter hahaha. But it’s ok. Still got me excited. Something I kinda disliked: the affair? Like… why? The author could’ve made them both single and it would’ve barely changed their relationship. But that’s probably just my personal preference. Altogether I can say: it was a great book with its little flaws, I’m still looking forward to read more of Dr. Scarpettas cases.
