About the book

Something Borrowed is the smash-hit debut novel from Emily Giffin for every woman who has ever had a complicated love-hate friendship. The basis for the blockbuster movie starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, and John Krasinski!

Rachel White is the consummate good girl. A hard-working attorney at a large Manhattan law firm and a diligent maid of honor to her charmed best friend Darcy, Rachel has always played by all the rules. Since grade school, she has watched Darcy shine, quietly accepting the sidekick role in their lopsided friendship. But that suddenly changes the night of her thirtieth birthday when Rachel finally confesses her feelings to Darcy's fiance, and is both horrified and thrilled to discover that he feels the same way.

As the wedding date draws near, events spiral out of control, and Rachel knows she must make a choice between her heart and conscience. In so doing, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

Something Borrowed is another chick lit book that I recently read but I absolutely loved it. Emily Giffin has a big talent in writing a love story without being cheesy. She wrote the story in a really amusing and refreshing way. It makes you laugh and you start feeling with the characters. You understand how terrible Rachel feels about cheating on Darcy, her oldest friend but also why she cannot stop it. Emily Giffin manages to present Darcy in such a way that you really start to hate her. She has such an awful character and you just wish that Dexter breaks up with her to be with Rachel. I was sceptical at first place if I could like a story that is just about betrayal but I think in the end, the story is about so much more. It is about friendship and true love and it totally demonstrates real life. Even though all of us know that cheating is not right we cannot ignore that it frequently happens in real life. What this story shows is that you cannot control your feelings and that you cannot just decide who you have feelings for. Feelings just happen even if they seem to be wrong. This does not mean that there aren‘t better ways to deal with the situation than cheating but those secret feelings still exist! The book reminded me a lot of the movie The Wedding Planner. In this case it was just not the wedding planner who fell in love with the groom but the maid of honour. The story is really romantic, chaotic, sad and funny at the same time and that is what I like about it. And in the end Emily Giffin even manages to surprise the reader with a secret that nobody expected. I could not put it down until I read the whole story. It was nut just because of the story itself but because of the brilliant way Emily Giffin is writing and describing everything. I felt as if I was a part of the story just being a quiet observer. It is a great read! Not too deep and easy to follow but not at all boring. After I‘ve finished the book, I also found out that there has been a movie based on the book which will be available on DVD soon. Even though I am usually disappointed about movies that are based on a book because the movie can never be as detailed as the book, I still want to watch it. If you still need a good book for a rainy day at home, a sunny day in the park or for your next holiday trip, I can totally recommend this one to you.
