Band 3 der Westeros-Saga - Charakter werden entwickelt und fallen gelassen Ich habe sehr lange gebraucht, um den 3. Band der Game of Thrones Reihe weiterzulesen. Ich mochte Teil 1 sehr, Teil 2 fand ich etwas schwächer und der jetzige Teil "A Storm of Swords" hat mir wieder besser gefallen. Nach wie vor weiß ich nach einem Kapitel nicht, ob ich weiter lesen will oder nicht, weil es einfach mit einem ganz anderen Storyteil weitergeht. Es hat mich sehr gefreut zu sehen, wie G. R. R. Martin die Charakter in diesem Buch weiterentwickelt, gerade Jon und Jamie werden enorm detailliert präsentiert mit all ihren Gedanken und Gefühlen. Dennoch hat der Autor nach wie vor auch den Mut Hauptcharaktere fallen zu lassen und zu töten. Ich fand es schön zu sehen, wie in diesem Band die einzelnen Teile stärker zusammengeflossen sind, auch wenn es nach wie vor viele einzelne Geschichten sind. Es gibt immer wieder sehr überraschende Twists in der Geschichte, die der Geschichte wirklich etwas Besonderes geben. Dennoch verlieren die Bücher durch den Hype und die Serie aus meiner Sicht an Stärke und es ist einfach schade, dass noch nicht alle Bände veröffentlicht sind.
For the first couple of hundred pages you are left thinking "When is this story finally going to get started!", but once it gets going, this is one of the best novels (of all genres) I have read for a long time. It kept me gripped, unaware and genuinely shocked by the events which occured. I wouldn't recommend reading it as a stand-alone book as too much has happened in the first two books that you could not simply skip past without some sort of knowledge of it, but if you have read the first two books or are a fan of the series, then this third installment is definitely well worth the read.
The actual rating would be something like 3.4 stars. To set it apart from the previous two books, I rated this three. I had my favourite Fantasy moment so far in this book, with Bran, the Reeds, and Samwell. I also had new reason to confirm the author as Lord of the Hints. And I also had just too much blood, and gore, and gruesomeness. It isn't that I felt disgusted or sick or disturbed. I just got bored. Still, after a certain infamous wedding I had a reading streak and quite some good moments, including a second wedding gone awry (which reassured me that my view on weddings is healthy: just stay away). But in the end, I found myself stumbling again, and felt a little, well, cheated by the author in pulling a "trick" or two that would send roleplayers everywhere jumping in their dungeon master's face. Only read the following hidden passage if you have read the whole book already. You are warned. I am sure Arya will be quite pleased, should she ever find out that she dragged her mother's corpse ashore after a few days of rotting in water with her direwolf's help so that Lord Beric and His Merry Men could find and resurrect her. Still, I can't help wondering whether a Catelyn who can merely glower and point isn't an improvement after all... I do hope there will be more insights to come on the Wall itself, now that we know it is quite magical and will neither let supernatural creatures from beyond pass nor Starks keep contact metally to their direwolves should they be on the other side. To sum it up, some characters got interesting developments, but all in all I felt this was the weakest of the three books I read so far in this hypothetical heptalogy.
While the first half sometimes dragged a little and included some long-winded scenes surrounding Arya, Sansa or Catelyn which were tiring to read, I love everything about the second half of this book: the uprising of the tension culminating in several huge turning points, the character developments, the amazing prose, and so much awesomeness. Jaime and Brienne are two characters which grew to my heart, and Tyrion only proved why he is one of my favorite characters ever. Apart from some badass moments surrounding Daenerys (dragons! yay!), Samwell was my personal hero out of this novel. Jon's storyline and the climax at the Wall was disappointing, but only in comparison to the other plots, not in itself. Highest recommendation possible!

Achtung, Spoiler für alle, die “A Game of Thrones” und “A Clash of Kings” noch nicht gelesen haben! Nach der großen Schlacht von King’s Landing scheinen die Lannisters um Ekelpaket König Joffrey einen eindeutigen Vorteil in der Auseinandersetzung der verschiedenen Thronanwärter zu haben, doch die Lage ist weiter offen. Die Geschichte der Charaktere wird nahtlos fortgesetzt. Dieser dritte Teil der Saga “A Song of Ice and Fire” hält einige Überraschungen, wenn nicht gar Schocks für die Leser bereit. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, jemals ein Buch einer Reihe gelesen zu haben, in dem der Autor so viele Charaktere – sowohl positive als auch negative – opfert, dazu noch auf teils wirklich grausame Art. Die Charaktere werden dabei weiter ausgearbeitet, was mir vor allem gefallen hat, war die Vertiefung des Charakters Jaime Lannister, den ich bisher eher als oberflächliche Figur wahrgenommen habe. Manche Figuren, von denen ich schon dachte: “Von dem überrascht mich nix mehr.” schaffen es, ihre Skrupellosigkeit doch noch einmal zu toppen. Von einer Person, die ich bisher wirklich mochte, bin ich maßlos enttäuscht, auch für sie wird es das letzte Buch sein. Meine Lieblingsfigur ist nach wie vor Tyrion, ich bin total gespannt, wie es mit ihm weitergeht. Das Buch ist fesselnd, wenn auch nicht ganz so sehr wie der Vorgänger, gut lesbar, allerdings wirklich sehr, sehr lang. Und wie gewohnt grausam… Das Buch beweißt außerdem, dass George R. R. Martin nicht wie jeder andere Fantasyautor schreibt, das ist vielleicht der größte Pluspunkt: Es ist wirklich nichts, aber auch gar nichts vorhersehbar. Gute Fortsetzung, der ich vier von fünf Sternen gebe. Ich freue mich schon auf “A Feast for Crows”, trotz der zahlreichen Verluste!
