“Why We Sleep is an important and fascinating book…Walker taught me a lot about this basic activity that every person on Earth needs. I suspect his book will do the same for you.” —Bill Gates

A New York Times bestseller and international sensation, this “stimulating and important book” (Financial Times) is a fascinating dive into the purpose and power of slumber.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life—eating, drinking, and reproducing—the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

An explosion of scientific discoveries in the last twenty years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.

Walker answers important questions about sleep: how do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and accessible, Why We Sleep is a crucial and illuminating book.

Anyone even slightly concerned with increasing their long-term health and happiness should read this book, and sleep around 8 hours every night!!!

Did you wake up by an alarm clock this morning? Time to read this book, it is for you.

What sleep can do for you and what sleep deprivation does to you. I doubt you can grasp the entire picture since sleeping less impacts you greatly but simultaniously prevents you from seeing it for yourself. This book has my believe reinforced that sleep is one of the most important things in life. If i can live 10 years longer and experience family in that time by just sleeping an hour longer i'd accept that trade any day. If you use alarm clocks during the week the book is essential for you. If you lie in bed and scroll through your phone or even have a tv in the bedroom this is for you. Do you spent hours on end in the evening prolonging the inevitable sleep just to wake up tired and regret not going earlier? This is for you. I take naps since school. They were essential for me. I embraced them during uni and aced many exams with naps in my repertoir. I feel refreshed when i can take a nap during my workday and hate it when i can't in the office. If you think sleep is just something we need to do and deserves to be cut short this book (and I) will gladly prove you wrong on every conceivable level.

The book offered me new perspectives regarding better sleeping and how I can personally improve my sleep quality. But this is book isn't a "sleep-help-book" but rather offers a lot of information regarding what happens in the body during sleep, what are the different sleep stages and how they affect overall health. The author also writes about how modern medicine copes with sleeping disorders and what can be improved in the 21st century regarding sleep quality.

Very valuable information, but it's so 'rich', that it takes a while to work through. Worth it nontheless! (If you only want a few tips without knowing why and how, you could just read the appendix. He summarized the most important takes there.)

This book has undoubtedly changed my life. Sleep is as important as diet and exercise for your health, yet terribly neglected. I loved how Matthew Walker stressed the importance of sleep and the ways society could change to help get more of it. On the other hand, some of the reasoning was weirdly economical. I hated the bit where it was suggested people should sleep more to be more efficient at work and make the economy grow. I also had a good portion of deja-vu throughout… this is partly due to studies discussed having similar findings, but also partly due to structure. A good chunk in the middle was quite hard to get through without thinking… haven’t I read this before…? Perhaps this will help engraving the knowledge into my brain.

Fantastic book. Learned a lot about sleep and the importance of it. The only part I did not find as interesting as the rest was the chapter about dreaming, but it’s a great read nonetheless.

I consider this book a must-read. It is written by one of the world's leading sleep scientists and explains the fascinating sience of sleep. But the true value of this book lies not in the information you gain from reading it - which are important as well though - but rather in the increased appreciation for sleep every reader probably experiences. So if you sleep just twenty minutes longer because you read this book, it was well worth the money and time you invested in it. Why? Just read!

Do yourself a favour and read this book! This book really deserves 5 stars. We all sleep yet few of us know why we do it and what function it serves. This book takes the reader onto a journey through the science behind sleep and uncovers in a very understandable way which systems are at play. It draws a clear picture of what a lack of sleep does to sleeping creatures and why most of us should change the way we approach sleep. This is all done in a wonderfully concise, scientifically accurate and humerous manner. The author gives valuable advise and solution strategies to overcome the "world wide sleep deprivation epidemic". I really like books that deconstruct the seemingly mundane things. Things we just do without wondering why. Good read!
