THE GILDED WOLVES

Lieb die verschiedenen Charaktere und den historischen Faktor! Das Finale konnte ich mir nur leider irgendwie nicht so gut vorstellen 🙈

Das war toll! Eins meiner Jahreshighlights glaube ich 😍 es hatte definitiv Six of Crows vibes, mit der kriminellen found family and all, war aber trotzdem seine eigene Geschichte und Welt 😊 Die Charaktere sind alle wunderbar und ich konnte mich bis zum Ende nicht entscheiden, wen ich am liebsten mochte.. Besonders toll fand ich die Vielfalt der Charaktere und ihrer ethnischen, religiösen und familiären Hintergründe! 😍 Die Geschichte an sich ist auch super spannend, auch wenn man definitiv aufpassen muss, dass man alles mitbekommt und alle Zusammenhänge kapiert. Die Welt, in die man eintaucht ist faszinierend und toll beschrieben, dass man es richtig vor sich sieht. Im Nachwort schreibt die Autorin, dass es ihr wichtig war, dem glitzernden Schein die klaffenden Abgründen der Zeit gegenüber zu stellen, was ihr mMn super gelungen ist. Ich empfehle die Reihe allen, die gerne in die Belle Epoque in Paris eintauchen wollen und die Found Family tropes mögen 😁 Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf die nächsten Bände! 😍

Eine sehr gute Grundidee, der an vielen Stellen die Tiefe fehlt

Diese Rezension zu schreiben, fällt mir keineswegs leicht. Warum? Für mich ist es sehr schwer meine Gedanken und Meiningen zu diesem Buch in Worte zu fassen. Ein Teil von mir liebt dieses Buch sehr und hatte unfassbar viel Freude beim Lesen und gleichzeitig kann ein anderer Teil nur schwer über die Mängel hinwegsehen. „The Gilded Wolves“ führt uns in ein alternatives Paris, welches mit Steampunk Elementen verknüpft wurde. Alleine das Setting hat mich schon sehr angesprochen. Generell gefiel es mir auch sehr gut, dass hier viele Mythologien vorkommen und verknüpft werden. Der erste Teil des Buches konnte mich auch sehr überzeugen. Die Charaktere waren, auch wenn ich deutliche Parallelen zu Six of Crows ziehen konnte, sehr interessant und sehr divers. Besonders Zofia gefiel mir sehr gut, da sie die erste autistische Protagonistin ist, die mir in einem Fantasy Buch begegnet ist. Leider blieben die Charaktere abseits Severin jedoch recht Pfahl und gerade Hypnos und Tristan wurden nur wenig beleuchtet. Besonders zu Hypnos hätte ich mir mehr gewünscht, da er definitiv mein absoluter Lieblingscharakter ist. Aber vielleicht sehen wir ja mehr von ihm im zweiten Teil. Auch die Beziehung der Charaktere untereinander kam mir persönlich etwas zu kurz. Die Freundschaft der Charaktere war schön und ich fand es interessant, dass diese zusätzlich zu den eigenen Motiven der Charaktere dazu führten, dass sie den Auftrag annahmen, aber irgendwie hätte ich mir hier mehr Backstory gewünscht. Das Magie System war einerseits sehr interessant und in gewisser Art und Weise einmalig, allerdings habe ich das Gefühl, dass ich es nicht zu 100% verstanden habe, da es dann doch phasenweise mit den Erklärungen zu kurz kam. Generell habe ich das Gefühl, dass die Autorin bei diesem Buch sehr viele Themen gleichzeitig behandeln wollte, dass aber nicht zu 100% klappte. Vermutlich liegt es daran, dass der Fokus der Geschichte stark auf den Diebstahl gelegt wurde und was die Charaktere dafür tun müssen (dieses beinhaltet auch Rätsel, die zum Teil doch recht leicht waren, mich aber nicht weiter gestört hatten). Durch diesen starken Fokus ging für mich sehr viel verloren. Im Großen und Ganze hatte ich jedoch recht viel Freude mit dem Buch und ich hoffe das die Folgebände mehr Klarheit geben und man mehr von den einzelnen Charakteren erfährt.

Inhaltlich hat mir die Geschichte richtig gut gefallen und mir einige „Das Lied der Krähen“ Vibes gegeben! Da ich aber ein paar Probleme mit dem englisch hatte (nicht bewertet), werde ich die Reihe auf deutsch weiter lesen.

Schon allein die Charaktere haben mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen - jeder von ihnen ist ganz eigen, speziell und besonders und hat (neben der "eigentlichen" Handlung) eine Geschichte zwischen den Zeilen zu erzählen. Das wurde sehr schön in das Buch miteingewoben und hat mir jeden einzelnen von ihnen nochmal ein Stück nähergebracht. Ich will auch gar nicht entscheiden, wen ich denn jetzt am liebsten mag - Séverin, Laila, Enrique, Zofia, Tristan oder vielleicht Hypnos? . Das Gefühl, das die Geschichte vermittelt, legt es natürlich nahe, es mit "Six of Crows" zu vergleichen. Ich finde jedoch, dass "The Gilded Wolves" nichtsdestotrotz oder auch gerade deswegen nochmal seine ganz eigene Tonart hat. Zum einen mit dem traumhaft schönen Setting (Paris!

I was really excited for this because i read in some reviews that it is a bit like 'Six of Crows' or 'The Raven Boys'. The idea feels like those books, yes. I liked the idea behind it but some things fell a bit flat for me: Some of the characters voices didn't read too differently. Still, i enjoyed the thoughts and feelings and struggles of 'fitting in' (lots of Poc/queer characters) , even if that was not the main focus of the story. A bigger part that didn't work out for me was the world building/ the magic aspect of it: It's called 'Forging' but it never really get explained! I was waiting for us to learn what the limitations/rules are. It seems like some people have an affinity for different types of Forging but there were so so many 'forged' objects that the characters used(and that they somehow got /bought /whatever) that i felt as if everyone could do it. There was also always just a magical object helping them in a difficult situation. I found that a bit weird. I will def. read the next book because i am hoping we get more explanations/world building and i did like most of the characters, so...It's just not as good as i expected i guess.

I dont know… like many others I came here looking for something simular to six of crows and although there were some parallels I think it was lacking a lot of depht. By that I especially mean the characters as well as the magic system. The book also had a huge problem with telling rather than showing. For example we are told multiple times that the main crew was the best in paris and that they are extremly capabele but after reading the whole book I honestly cant think of a single plan that worked. They always just get extremly luck and manage to somehow solve the problem on the spot. All in all I think there were a lot of great ideas but the potential just wasnt used enough.

Ich habe dieses Buch geliebt. Zofia, Enrique und Hypnos haben mein Herz gestohlen und ich will ganz bestimmt nicht lesen, wie Roshani Chokshi sie kaputt macht. (Werde natürlich dennoch weiterlesen.) Roshanis wundervoller Schreibstil und Humor kommen auch in diesem Buch wieder wunderbar zur Geltung, ich habe die Rätsel und Details geliebt und möchte bitte im L'Eden einziehen. Die historischen Hintergründe fand ich super spannend und toll in die Geschichte verpackt - definitiv ein Buch, das ich noch ganz oft weiterempfehlen werde. Und habt vllt den nächsten Band zur Hand, wenn ihr dieses lest. Das Ende ist eines der fiesesten, das ich zuletzt gelesen habe.

2,5/5 i'm so sorry. i was ready to love this book. i wanted to love it - but i couldn't. one of my reading habits is starting a new book and then immediately switching to its last pages. i love reading acknowledgements and especially author's notes! and roshani chokshi wrote such a beautiful author's note that got me super excited about the book! now, if only this novel would've kept what the author's note promised me... i thought that this book was super cool in theory but in reality, i struggled immensely to get into the story. in fact, i didn't get into it at all until the very end. the whole fantasy aspect was just NOT my cup of tea. maybe that's just me - i haven't been that into fantasy for years, and i also didn't expect this book to be magical in the way it was. since i study social anthropology, i was so intrigued to read about the expedition universelle and the themes of colonialism but well, the gilded wolves is a fantasy book, so of course that wasn't the main focus. still, objectively, it's a good book. it has nice characters and i have to admit that i'm rooting for those ships despite my complaining. the friendship between our main characters was lovely, too. i enjoyed reading about the l'eden-five as an established squad and about them starting to get to know hypnos better. tgw is diverse and creative and fun and different - i just didn't really care for the story. at the moment i don't feel like picking up the next books but i guess the hype could get to me again haha! since the story isn't over yet, there's room for more in-depth exploration of important themes, and more space for friendship and fun banter and romance. :) and uhhh... the next time i'm craving six of crows-vibes i guess i'll just reread that instead of buying a book that's supposed to be like it but can't live up to it. (or i'll FINALLY get king of scars)

2 stelle = è okay. Ma il finale non lo è. Libro più che altro per una fascia di età tra i 12 e i 15 anni, per il resto tutto già letto e visto in altre mille salse, con una storia un pochino più interessante.
