Um ihre Familie vor der Armut zu bewahren, übernimmt Miryem die Arbeit ihres Vaters als Geldverleiher in ihrem Dorf. Ihr Geschäftssinn und der schnell steigende Reichtum ihrer Familie, bringt ihr bald den Ruf ein, „Silber zu Gold“ machen zu können. Als der König der Staryk, ein Volk eisiger Fabelwesen, von Miryem erfährt, stellt er ihr 3 Prüfungen, um ihre Fähigkeiten zu testen, und nimmt sie nach erfolgreichem Bestehen zur Frau und mit in sein Eisreich, um mit ihrer Gabe für ewigen Winter zu sorgen. In der Hauptstadt des Landes versucht der Graf indes seine eher unscheinbare Tochter Irina mit dem Zar zu verheiraten. Doch dieser wird seit seiner Geburt von einem grausamen Feuerdämon beherrscht, der sich Irina, die mütterlicherseits Starykblut in sich trägt, zur Stärkung seiner Macht einverleiben will. Beide Frauen versuchen ihrem unfreiwilligen Schicksal zu entkommen und schließen ein Bündnis. Aber wie hoch ist der Preis, um einander und die Menschen, die sie lieben, vor Eis und Feuer zu beschützen? ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolut solider Fantasy-Roman mit 2 (wobei… eigentlich mindestens 3) starken FMCs und jeder Menge Nebencharakteren, die man im Laufe der Geschichte lieben lernt. Novik belohnt uns erneut mit einem tollen Worldbuilding mit slawischen Setting und einer (sehr) lose an das Märchen Rumpelstilzchen angelehnten Story. Sie kommt keinesfalls an „Uprooted“ von Novik dran, das insgesamt soviel magischer, atmosphärischer und bewegender war. Habe Spinning Silver trotzdem sehr genossen.

Great Fantasy Read

Es gibt viele wirklich gute Fantasy-Bücher, aber an und zu ist unter diesen ein ganz magisches - so wie dieses. Der Konflikt baut sich erst recht langsam auf, aber die ganze Atmosphäre ist so dicht und märchenhaft, dass ich trotzdem von Anfang an gefesselt war. Es gibt mehrere verschiedene POVs und mir ist erst gar nicht aufgefallen, dass sie gar nicht benannt sind - jeder Charakter hat eine so eigene Stimme, dass man sofort weiß, wer spricht. Definitiv ein neues Lieblingsbuch!

Spinning Silver - A winter fantasy novel, set in a medieval slavic kingdom with a jewish heroine. Or rather a bunch of awesome heroines. It was a very satisfying read! Strong women grow beyond the restrictions of their time, outsmart their oh-so-powerfull husbands and rock the day~ Going into this I expected a close retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin, but Naomi Novik spinns her own magical tale, reshuffling the magical elements and myths until her tale has an own voice. It's a story of a money lender's daughter - Miryem - who can turn silver into gold using her sharp mind and wits. Her talent catches the eye of the Staryk King - a cold and merciless magical being, the King of the Winter Realm and Glass Mountain. And he comes for her. It is also the story of Irina, the mousy daughter of a Duke, whose fathers wits make her a queen. "So the fairy silver brought you a monster of fire for a husband, and me a monster of ice. We should put them in a room together and let them make us both widows." And the story of Wanda and her brothers. Children from the very poor, with an abusive father but big hearts and strong characters. I loved all the fairy tale elements - the promise of the first born, bargains and trades, true promises, the alchemy of changing common day material into gold, the twilight places, neither here not there, magical roads and and magical trees. We follow six different POVs, most of them female. All of them strong willed and complex. They illuminate each others plots. It takes a while for the story to bring all the characters together. The pace is quick and the story captivating, I kept turning the pages! Mirnatius' POV is priceless - I loved his cynical broken mind. The Staryk Kings' POV would've made a nice addition. I appreciated the heartwarming end! A recommendation to all re-telling fans

Ich liebe Retellings und lese jedes Buch, was mir dazu in die Hände fällt.  Novik erzählt die Geschichte von Rumpelstilzchen, ändert jedoch das Setting und auch die Figuren. Man erkennt die wichtigsten Elemente des Märchens sehr gut, aber sie spinnt daraus eine ganz eigene Erzählung.  Es dauert ein wenig, bis man sich in der fremden Welt zurecht findet. Sie ähnelt zwar der unseren, dennoch gibt es Fantasyteile, die nicht von Anfang an klar sind, die aber nach und nach verständlicher werden.  Märchenhaft ist "Spinning Silver" nicht zwingend, es gibt keine tiefgründigere Aussage und wenig Symbolik, dafür aber gut ausgestaltete Figuren und einen gelungenen Spannungsbogen. Wer wie ich Spaß an Nacherzählungen hat, dem wird dieses Buch sicherlich gut gefallen.

It was a captivating and original story. The first fantasy I read after a long time! It got me hooked and I couldn’t leave it by side. The only thing which confused me was this switching of narrators which wasn’t always clear.

I loved this story! It was packed with a fairy-tale like atmosphere, a wonderfully well created plot and an enjoyqble variety of characters. Just having finished reading this a few minutes ago, there are still questions that I have left, regarding the world or certain characters. But that is surprisingly not even a bad thing, it just leaves a lot to your own imagination, which is what fairy-tales are about right? The only thing that slightly bothered me that I was confused every time a new point of view was introduced because of having to figure out who was now telling the story. So, I wouldn't have minded if the name of the character whose point of view it had always been stated.

A wonderfully told story, very well crafted and very compelling. Loved all the strong female characters!
