Overall a really good book
I blindly bought that book some time ago and didn't expect much. While reading I cried several times because at some points I was so frustrated, angry and sad. I was hoping for more clarity at the ending, but over all it was a great book that stayed in my mind for some time.
* 2,5 ⭐️
I started the book with little to no expectations, but was still pleasantly surprised. It's about Corey, who moves away from her hometown Lost Creek in Alaska. Corey to her best friend Kyra that she will be back for the next vacation. But before this reunion, Kyra dies, she is found under the ice surface of the lake. Corey travels back to pay Kyra her last respects. When she arrives in Lost Creek, Corey immediately notices that the place has changed in just a few months. People treat Corey like a stranger and whisper about her behind her back. Every time Corey asks someone about Kyra, she is told that the village meant well for Kyra and that her death was meant to be. Corey wants to know what happened to her best friend, and only has a few days to do so. The chapters in the book were all very short, but that was nice because you could move forward quickly. Also that came in between flahsbacks has not disturbed the reading flow at all. The writing style was pleasant and fluid. However, the few scenes where from the first person perspective was changed to the third person perspective and the plot rather reminded me of a screenplay. I didn't quite understand the point of that, but since there were only a few, I could tolerate it. I also found Corey slightly unlikable at times. She accused the people of Lost Creek of not caring about Kyra and that she was the only real friend for Kyra, which is not true. If Corey was really such a great friend, then maybe she could have responded to Kyra's letters after all, or at least read them. Since she didn't do that, and that she pretty much never told anyone about Kyra, I wouldn't say that Corey was there for Kyra. The book deals with topics like bipolar disorder, depression, and suicide, so with such difficult topics I would think about maybe putting a trigger warning at the beginning.
