Nothing will probably ever top the Kate Daniels series for me. But it was so much fun to read another Ilona Andrews book again-and to dive back into a new world created by these authors. I stayed up all night reading I really liked it. It had a few surprises in store, too. The world-building was a bit much at times, though I usually enjoy that. A lot happened, but it wasn't as "epic" as I'd expected at first. But that's okay-it was only Book 1, after all. • I LOOOOVE the characters!!!! The two of them always write the fight scenes so well, and I love - their humor. The worlds they create are never boring, either. I'd love to read Volume 2 right away

Inmitten der generischen RomComs, der immer seichter werdenden Romantasies, McFaddens Psychospielchen und der schieren Menge an Veröffentlichungen, für die man ja sogar als Speedreader fünf Leben brauchen würde, um da mitzukommen, taucht aus dem Nichts dieses Buch auf. This is what dreams are made of. Der Plot ist an sich schnell erklärt: Junge Frau wird in ihr Lieblingsbuch gesogen, wacht dort mit allen Skills auf, die man in dieser Welt zum Überleben braucht und nimmt sich vor, das ihr bekannte Ende zu verbessern. Wie kommt sie in das Buch? Man weiß es nicht. Woher hat sie alle Fähigkeiten? Keine Ahnung. Wieso spricht sie alle Sprachen dieser Welt? Who cares? WHO CARES????? This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me ist das, was Bücher früher mal waren, bevor man damit begonnen hat, irgendwelche Fantasywesen und „badass“ heroines um Sexszenen zu drapieren, die junge Leser:innen potentiell verstören und bei älteren Leser:innen eventuell Komplexe hervorrufen könnten. Ist ja alles ok, aber DIESES Buch… es hat alles! Es hat einen Plot, der nicht mit dem story telling - Würfel der Englischlehrerin aus der Unterstufe enstanden ist. Charaktere, die nicht nur vielschichtig sind, sondern auch noch liebenswert. Das Ganze würzt man dann mit der Stimme einer jungen Frau aus dem 21. Jahrhundert, die in einer Fantasywelt festeckt und sich durch echte Scharfsinnigkeit und viel Humor auszeichnet. Dann gibt es da noch eine love story, die mal so richtig slow burned und ohne ein einziges „you‘re mine“, „good girl“ oder „insert male grunting“ auskommt. Sidekicks der Extraklasse und so viele plot twists, das sie einem glatt das Hirn vernebeln könnten, wenn nicht alles so genial wäre, dass man das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen kann. Will. Soll. Es ist lange her, das mich etwas so gefesselt hat und nachdem es noch nicht einmal den Ansatz eines Erscheinungsdatums für den zweiten Band gibt, verweile ich hier very book hungover und in freudiger Erwartung auf den Folgegeniestreich.

Portal fantasy with a twist I really enjoyed This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, even though I wasn’t immediately convinced it would be my kind of book (especially after having read a book last year where the woman was thrown into her favourite novel, and it was just weird and cringe). But here things never seem like a farce or satire, but the story takes itself seriously, while still giving us a lot of humor and wit. I liked Maggie a lot as an FMC. She’s smart, capable, and emotionally grounded, even though I could have done with a bit less of the modern, GenZ coded language. Still, her voice grew on me, and I appreciated how self-aware she is about her situation. The MMC also surprised me in a good way - he’s interesting, layered, has a twist I didn't see coming - and is not just there to be swoon-worthy. The first half had me a bit on the fence; I wasn’t fully sure where the story was going or if I was completely sold. But as the book progressed, I found myself more and more immersed, increasingly invested in the politics, the relationships, and Maggie’s voice and her place in this world. I especially loved the found family elements, which added warmth and emotional grounding. And yes, there is an animal(?) companion, which always wins me over. All in all, I recommend, and wanna read more about Maggie the Undying. The audiobook is perfect for this story, as the accents the narrator is doing gives so much life and vibrancy to the characters.
