Dieses Buch hat mich von der ersten Seite an gefesselt! Die Prämisse mit dem alten Friedhof als Raucherecke für die Nachteulen des Campus hat mich direkt gecatched. Vor allem, da Edie, Tamar, Theo, Hannah und Tuck alle so verschieden sind. Wären ihre Schlafprobleme nicht gewesen, hätten sie sich vermutlich niemals kennengelernt. Ihre Wege hätten sich niemals gekreuzt. Sie wären niemals Freund:innen geworden – wenn man das denn so nennen mag. Dadurch, dass das Buch immer wieder den point of view wechselt, bekommt man Einblick in das Erleben aller fünf Friedhofsbesucher, was ich super spannend fand. Vor allem, weil sie ein und dieselbe Situation zum Teil ganz verschieden wahrnehmen. Sie alle haben ihre Schwächen, ihre Flaws, aber auch ihre liebenswerten Seiten. Vor allem Theo und Tuck hatten da ein paar Szenen, bei denen mir das Herz aufgegangen ist. Dann das „Mysterium“. Das Loch, das eines Nachts einfach in ihrer designierten Raucherecke auftaucht und, ehe sie sich versehen, zur Lagerstätte für eine Ladung toter Ratten wird. Es folgen Ermittlungen, Recherchen, Verhöre – und die ungute Vermutung, dass zumindest eine von ihnen tiefer in der Sache drinsteckt, als ihr lieb wäre. Dazu die Atmosphäre des Friedhofes bei Nacht. Die alte Kirche. Die Pilze und Flechten. Und dann dieses Ende…. Online habe ich gelesen, dass viele sich gewünscht hätten, das Buch wäre länger gewesen. Dass ihnen die Handlung zu rushed war. Dass der Roman eher eine Sammlung an Vibes wäre als eine richtige Geschichte. Und, dass das Ende viel zu abrupt wäre. Ich muss sagen, dem stimme ich so gar nicht zu. Ich habe das Ende geliebt. Denn in meinen Augen wissen wir gerade durch den letzten Satz ganz genau, was mit der entsprechenden Figur passieren wird. Wir wissen, wozu sie verdammt ist. Und da ich tragische und offene Enden liebe, war das hier so ziemlich der perfekte Mix für mich. Ich liebe, dass die ganze Geschichte innerhalb einer Nacht spielt. Dass sie eben mal nicht so lang ist, wie die Bücher, die ich normalerweise lese. In meinen Augen schafft M. L. Rio es perfekt, genug Details zu geben, um eine sinnvolle und in sich geschlossene Geschichte zu erzählen und ihre Charaktere vielschichtig zu gestalten, ohne dabei zu ausufernd zu werden. Für mich ein absolutes Highlight!

This book really caught me in the beginning - throughout the first half I was so into it. But honestly, after they solved the main part of the mystery it kinda lost me. I felt that it maybe got solved to quickly and in kind of an unsatisfying way? I don’t necessarily have an Issue with Open Endings, but this just felt kinda…unfinished? Idk. Maybe that was also done purposely, but it wasn’t really for me. I did thoroughly enjoy the style of writing, the general way the characters were build and how we got an insight into all of their realities (which is something I especially admire, as this many pov’s in this short amount of time can also go very wrong). I just wish it was longer and the mystery was more fleshed out, because it certainly was very interesting to speculate about :’) but maybe that’s also just a novel thing? I don’t have the best grasp on what a novel entails tbh.

I was unfortunately expecting more. Not very scary at all and the characters fell kind of flat for me. The majority of narrative voices being either stereotypical and boring (edie and theo) or straight up annoying (hannah) took away a lot from the two characters i actually felt somewhat interested in (tamar and tuck). The premise of the plot felt promising initially but then didnt dig in deep enough into those scarier horror aspects to keep my attention, personally.

Erhofft hatte ich mir eine Kurzgeschichte voller düsterem Nervenkitzel. Mit einem Hauch Horror und Mysterie und eventuell einer kleinen Schnitzeljagd. Und dann ist einfach nichts passiert. Das Grundszenario fand ich spannend, zwischendrin gabs einige Details die aufgemacht wurden und viel versprachen, am Ende jedoch ins Nichts führten. Gegen Ende war da auch kein Plot Twist, der doch noch zu einem kleinen Aha-Erlebnis hätte führen können. Finds schade, man hätte hier ein bisschen mehr raus holen können.

Notes: - the character introductions are very well for so many characters and such a short book - it’s not exactly what I imagined with the title and the cover, still a great promise - the vibe is is very dark academia - interesting characters and intriguing story Favourite quotes: “Time passes differently at night, when there are no external indicators that the world is turning.” “The world had no room for him, no use. It was easier to simply disappear.” “Misery loved company and made strange bedfellows.”

Read it on the Kindle, so the ending came abruptly. It served as a palate cleanser for me and was nice to read. Although it’s a little unrealistic that a few people who barely know each other would decide to solve a case together, realism isn’t important for the story. I liked the writing style, and it was entertaining, so I got everything I wanted. :)

The premise is pretty good but I would’ve either wished that this book would’ve been longer and more detailed or just more exciting and instead just focusing on only one or two of the characters. I honestly just didn’t get what was supposed to be so “hair-raisingly tense” about this. The characters are good but don’t get enough backstory in a short book like this to make them likeable for me. I get the idea but I feel like there’s a lot to do better here.

- It's a rather short novella of a little over 100 pages, so I'm not completely surprised that the characters fell short in this more plot-driven rather than character-driven story. - The mystery surrounding the rats being buried on the graveyard is gripping and the resolution satisfying in a narrative sense, yet I was hoping for a bit "more." - The novella ended rather abruptly and left me feeling a bit like I was left hanging. - The ending also took me a second to fully wrap my head around, which in itself isn't a bad thing, but felt unsatisfactory when combined with the abrupt end to an otherwise good experience. All in all, I'd say the novella, despite its shortcomings, is worth a shot, however. I still enjoyed the time I had with it, even if it left me feeling less content than I expected at first.

To be fair I expected something else going into this BUT I wasn't disappointed. As in "We were Villains" I loved the writing, I love how different the writing sounds depending on whose point of view you are following. I loved the mystery and how the characters got together to solve it.

Ich dachte zu Beginn des Buches, das es ein spannender und markaberer Triller wird. Es fing auch erstmal gut an. Das Buch ist aus der Sicht von 5 Charaktere geschrieben. Man lernt also alle Charaktere kennen. Und dann tauchen unzählige tote raten auf und es wird auf einem Pilz aufmerksam gemacht. So weit,so gut. Dann wird ein Testprojekt aufgedeckt und die Bösewichte entdeckt. Aber dann... Ist das Buch zuende. Es endete damit, das eine der Charaktere bei ihnen anderen schläft und auf einmal schlafen kann. Sie könnte vorher nicht schlafen und hat bei dieser Testreihe mit den Pilzen teilgenommen. Die anderen Kandidaten sind gestorben.... Aber sie lebt. Mir hat der richtig spannende Teil gefehlt. Wo ist der Horror? Da würde das Buch in meiner Buchhandlung definitiv falsch vermarktet. Also wer ,wie ich,mit einen Triller rechnet,wird leider enttäuscht . Das Buch hat mir aber trotzdem ok gefallen, deswegen 3 Sterne.

An interesting "dark academia" novella with a dash of sleep deprivation and hobby detective energy. There's a fresh grave dug in an abandoned graveyard. Why is it here? Who is supposed to be buried in it? Who dug the grave, and why? A small group of people, united by their nicotine addiction and sleep deprivation, stumble upon a mystery and decide to investigate. It wasn't really scary, although the beginning chapters were quite dark and mysterious. Over all, the focus is on the individual characters of the group, each quite chaotic in their own way, as they decide to investigate the source of the grave and the bigger mystery behind it all. The pacing was quite fast, due to the novella format. There was enough focus on each character to offer the reader some insight into their personality without getting stuck narrative-wise. The "mystery" wasn't too complex and the big reveal almost a little anticlimatic. But it didn't bother me too much. The group's journey and their individual efforts to solve this case was entertaining to follow.

In Graveyard Shift begleiten wir 5 „Freunde“ in einer Nacht bei der Auflösung eines Rätsels, in welches wir sofort hineingeworfen werden. Da sich alles in einer Zeitspanne von nicht einmal 12 Stunden abspielt, ist die Geschichte super rasant und fesselnd. Die Charaktere fand ich zwar nicht super sympathisch, sie waren aber einfach total „menschlich“ und konnten mich deshalb trotzdem abholen. Der Schreibstil war sehr bildlich und ich brauchte etwas um in das Englisch reinzukommen, aber es hat mir alles in Allem total Spaß gemacht das Buch zu lesen und mitzurätseln.

Graveyard Shift is a short novella, perfect for a quick read. Despite its length, the story delivers an intriguing premise with the mysterious fungus and the unsettling experiments surrounding it. The dynamic within the friend group adds a unique layer to the narrative, making it even more engaging. My personal favorite part was the "ending" with Tuck and Theo! (adorable!) Even though the book wraps up a bit abruptly, it definitely sticks with you and leaves you wanting more 🙌🏻

Ehrlich gesagt weiß ich nicht genau, was ich dazu sagen soll. Es fühlt sich an wie ein Sneak Peak in die Leben von 5 Menschen, wie ein Trailer für diese Geschichte, die durchaus catcht, aber eben nicht richtig angefangen hat und jetzt auch schon wieder vorbei ist. Die Art mit Worten Bilder zu erschaffen, hat mir sehr gut gefallen, alles war sehr poetisch und diese düstere, gloomy Oktober- Stimmung wurde überzeugend vermittelt. Ich hätte nur irgendwie gern ein ganzes Buch gehabt? Ich hätte gern eine vollständige Geschichte gehabt? Ich würde gern mehr erfahren. So war es für mich leider nichts Halbes und absolut nichts Ganzes.

Ich weiß gar nicht wie ich das Buch zusammenfassen soll. Ich bin nur mit dem Wunsch rein: - soll Mystery/Krimi, möglichst ohne Romance und nicht zu lang sein. Und ich bin absolut überrannt worden. Ich bin ein sehr langsamer Leser und habe es innerhalb eines Tages durchgelesen weil es so super spannend war. Die Charaktere sind super authentisch und nicht für den Leser zum mögen oder „hassen“ geschrieben worden, sondern einfach da. Die Geschichte wird aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln dargestellt und du bist am Ende mit dem Ergebnis super überrascht. Für die ein oder andere Person könnte die Geschichte zu wenig Aufbau haben und sich gehetzt anfühlen. Für mich war es genau richtig und hat zu den Charakteren gepasst. Das Ende war etwas „fies“ und ich hoffe wirklich sehr das es eine Fortsetzung geben wird.

Ich war anfangs skeptisch, da das Buch gefühlt meine erste Novelle ist und dann auch noch so eine obskure. Die Charaktere waren mir am Anfang etwas viel und ich wusste nicht 100% wer wer ist, aber über ein paar Seiten kommt man gut rein. Das sich das Thema um Pilze, Ratten und Insomnia dreht macht das ganze zu einem spannenden Mix, den man zwar nicht entspannt cozy, jedoch schnell weg lesen kann.

I feel like the odd one out for liking this so much when the whole internet thinks this is boring. But it was actually really enjoyable for a novella! Interesting and deep characters with multiple povs, a quick plot and on top it’s actually about a topic which I have a weird hyperfixation on. I wish this would have been a complete book tho.

Kurzweilig, durchaus spannend, atmosphärisch, aber in meinen Augen nicht wirklich gruselig - diese Worte umschreiben für mich „Graveyard Shift“ sehr gut. Es hat mir als kurze, spannende und englisch-sprachige Lektüre durchaus gefallen - aber war in meinen Augen auch nicht mehr als das.

I loved the gloom-and-doom atmosphere of M. L. Rios Graveyard Shift, but found the novella to be a little too surface level for my taste. The characters seem like mere ideas of people, the bits and bobs told about them unable to make me connect with them at all. Their interactions throughout the book felt genuine at times, yet the overall story about the mysterious hole that appeared in the graveyard where they meet for smokes had something artificial and forced about it. I‘m sure this idea could have turned into a good book, where the atmosphere, characters and the mystery would have unfolded beautifully, but in this state, Graveyard Shift felt like a waste of time.

And what's even more important: Who or what goes inside? "Graveyard Shift" is the newest book by M.L. Rio. She's known for her previous work "All of us Villains", which caught the attention of readers for it's dark, atmospheric writing. Her new novella tries to archieve the same eerie mood while also being compressed into about 100 pages. Did she succeed? I personally am not totally convinced. The book does a good job of keeping you engaged but if you're looking for the same character drive and mystery you might find yourself disappointed. It felt incomplete almost, trying to rush the plot forward as quick as possible and left me wanting more in the end. So is it even worth reading? If you're looking for an interesting premise, good writing and a book you can binge in a night, then go for it. But if you're searching for a well developed story with interesting characters you might want to keep looking.

Da das hier eine novella und keine novel ist, also eine Kurzgeschichte und kein Roman, werden weder die Charaktere tiefgreifend vorgestellt, noch das Ende wirklich aufgeklärt. Dadurch zeichnet sich eine Kurzgeschichte aber erst aus! Nach den Vorgaben der Literatur sind die Kriterien einer novella absolut getroffen. Ich fand das Thema super spannend und von dem was man von M.L. Rio sonst bekommt, war ich in keinster Weise enttäuscht.

M.L. Rio doesn’t disappoint with her dynamic writing and characters. My only “complaint” which I share with many other reviewers is that it just is a little too short for a the rather interesting plot . Personally, I do love the writing style but sometimes it borders on “coming off cooler than someone actually is” (especially Hannah) if that makes any sense to anyone. Apart from that the characters are well rounded and I liked the scenery descriptions a lot!

Einen Stern Abzug gibt’s, weil mir das Ende zu abrupt gekommen ist und ich gerne noch mehr erfahren hätte - über die Charaktere, über ihre Entwicklung und den weiteren Verlauf der Story. In der Geschichte tauchen wir ein in ein College Umfeld und lernen ein paar junge Erwachsene kennen, die so ihre Probleme mit Schlaf haben. Verbunden durch einen Friedhof als Raucherspot entdecken und lüften sie gemeinsam ein ekliges Geheimnis.

The amount of cigarettes smoked in this book is more alarming than the lack of sleep, but maybe that's just because I am not a smoker but occasionally a night owl. The story felt like the perfect length for a novella, barely offering a glimpse into the lives of the characters but enough to create an atmosphere I got caught in with all the vibes I wanted this story to have.
