Düster, geheimnisvoll, stellenweise richtig eklig, aber genau diese Mischung hatte für mich eine enorme Anziehungskraft. Crane hat in Salvation, ein Kult des Hive, eine Familie gefunden. Dort kann er sein, wer er ist, ohne Erwartungen, ohne sprechen zu müssen. Warum er nicht spricht und wie es dazu kam, wird später in schmerzhaften Erinnerungen erzählt. Levi hingegen … ich gestehe, ich habe ihn wirklich gehasst. Er ist auf seltsame Weise Cranes Anker, aber gleichzeitig nimmt er sich einfach, was er braucht. Eine toxische Beziehung durch und durch. Als Crane dann schwanger wird, bricht seine Welt komplett auseinander. All das, wovor er geflohen ist, holt ihn nun unerbittlich wieder ein. Und schlimmer noch: Der Hive zwingt ihn, dieses Kind auszutragen. Was genau allerdings das übergeordnete Ziel des Hives ist oder wozu sie das Kind brauchen, blieb für mich seltsam unklar. Gerade das hätte mich unglaublich interessiert, denn der Hive ist ein riesiger Wurm. Mehr Hintergründe zum Hive: wo er herkam, was genau er ist und was seine Ziele sind, hätten die Geschichte noch verstörender und zugleich runder wirken lassen. Das habe ich definitiv vermisst. Insgesamt ist es eine ungewöhnliche Story mit einem wirklich verstörenden Ende. Das Buch ist sicher nicht für jeden: Es ist speziell, brutal, herzzerbrechend, frustrierend, traumatisch, aber auch kreativ, sensibel und stellenweise überraschend warmherzig.
