This takes a really interesting approach to tell a simple but cute story. The illustrations telling Rose's story were beautiful and quite effective in showing everything you needed to know. The downside of this technique was that, at least my edition of the book, was really big and heavy for just telling such a short tale. I think the novel is more about emotional response and relating to these characters despite and because of their disabilities than about plot. Actually, not that much of interest happened but I was still thoroughly entertained by how heartwarming this was. A big part of how this kept me engaged was how it looked at books, silent films and museums and really portrayed a love for it. I don't think I would have been really able to appreciate this book as a kid, but everyone's different. The story itself is 3 stars for me, but the whole presentation, the representation and the heart put into it earns one extra.
I'm not sure if I have the words because there is so much that the reader experiences that isn't understood but felt. The story is being told in the narrative approach of using both words and illustrations, this time separating each style in its own story and weaving them together at the end. What I can definitely say about the book is that it is magical, it will make you want to read more, know more and by the end of the book, you will be smiling. :)
