In einer nahen Zukunft werden die meisten Staaten der Welt von Künstlicher Intelligenz regiert. Die dort lebenden Menschen haben sich in den neuen Systemen eingerichtet. Doch nicht alle Länder werden von KI regiert. In der autoritäten Föderation hält sich der (menschliche) Präsident auch nach seinem Tod im Amt, indem er seinen Geist in immer neue, künstlich erschaffene Körper lädt. Mit einem eisernen Überwachungsapparat hält er den Großteil seiner Bevölkerung in lethargischer Unterwürfigkeit. Doch eine Gruppierung im Schatten der globalen Überwachung macht sich daran, den schier unsterblichen Despoten zu stürzen. Das Buch ist fesselnd und stellt spannende Gedankenexperimente zu Entwicklungen an, die wir schon heute in unseren politischen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Systemen beobachten können. Die unterschiedlichen Protagonist*innen und ihre Gedankenwelten sind sehr gut und überzeugend geschrieben. Eine Geschichte, die nicht den Anspruch erhebt, alle aufgeworfenen Fragen zu beantworten – die aber auch lange nach der Lektüre hinaus zum Nachdenken anregt.
Near Future Sci-Fi ist einfach eines meines Lieblingsgenres und Nayler entwirft hier eine spannende Welt und Geschichte. Das Buch liest sich hervorragend und ist durchaus spannend. Allerdings sind es für meinen Geschmack zu viele Handlungsstränge, was dazu führt, dass die einzelnen Figuren zu wenig Raum für Entwicklung bekommen und eher flach bleiben. Dennoch ein sehr unterhaltsames Buch.
