Wer ist der Mörder oder die Mörderin? Worin besteht die magische Gabe dieser Person? Und was zur Hölle ist das Motiv? Spannend, unheimlich witzig, geistreich, schräg und herzerwärmend. Ein großartiges Buch!
Seit über 1000 Jahren wird der Friede in Concordia mit Hilfe magischer Gaben aufrechterhalten. Als es Zeit für die nächste Generation ist, ihr Erbe anzutreten, machen sich alle 12 Erben auf zu einer Schiffsreise zum heiligen Berg. Soweit so gut, wäre da nicht ein Mord kurz nach Beginn und die Gewissheit, dass einer der Erben ein Mörder sein muss. Und dann ist da noch Ganymedes, ein Tollpatsch, von allen gemieden, der Erbe der niedrigsten Provinz, der ein gefährliches Geheimnis hütet. Und ausgerechnet er scheint dieses mörderische Rätsel lösen zu wollen! Auf dem Schiff entfaltet sich eine fantastische Welt mit lebendigen Figuren und komplexen Beziehungen. Mehr als einmal war ich überrascht, vor allem von Dee als Protagonisten. Er hat mich bezaubert und berührt und manchmal hätte ich ihn schütteln und anschreien wollen 😂 Seine Entwicklung zu beobachten, hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Das Rätsel blieb für mich spannend und auch wenn ich eine zutreffende Idee hatte, war die Auflösung am Ende komplexer als gedacht.
Murder Mystery auf einem Schiff mit Twist
Vor ab: Das Englisch-Level ist sehr einfach und man kommt gut durch die Seiten. Unser Maincharakter (MC) Dee ist Zucker. Damit musst ich anfangen. Zucker, und wahnsinnig lustig. Die Welt ist in Provincen aufgeteilt, die alle unter dem Emperor mit krassen Fähigkeiten regiert werden. Es gibt inoffiziell mächtigere Provinzen und welche, die eher stiefmütterlich behandelt werden. Jede;r Erb:in hat pro Provinz eine besondere Fähigkeit, Blessing, die sich ab einem gewissen alter manifestiert. Blöderweise ist das bei unserem MC nie passiert und er schummelt sich durchs Leben. Alle Charaktere in diesem Buch sind großartig, obwohl sie auch eine Achterbahn der Gefühle sind und man von hassen zu nicht mögen zu ganz-ok zu wirkliche Lieben gut am pendeln ist. Das Murder Mystery findet komplett auf dem Schiff statt - komplett slow burn. Trotzdem ist es zu keiner Zeit langweilig - ganz im Gegenteil! Man vermutet hinter jedem Charakter zu gewissen Zeiten den Mörder, sogar beim MC. Ein paar ganz ganz großartige Twists, mit denen ich im Leben nicht gerechnet hätte. Trotz Einzelband ist das World Building großartig - wir kriegen erklärt, wie die Welt mit den Provinzen funktioniert, wer Herrschend ist und vor allem, wie die Gesellschaft wirklich aufgebaut ist. Auch, die unschönen und gruseligen Details. Die Geschichte hat ein mü queer Romance - ein mü. Dafür unglaublich schön. Ich hab dieses Buch wirklich genossen und verschlungen. Wenn man Mystery mag und lockere, lustige MCs, ist dieses Buch eine ganz klare Empfehlung.
A gripping, addictive murder mystery with a cheeky, relatable protagonist and just enough twists to keep you guessing. While the worldbuilding and romance felt a bit generic at times, and the ending wrapped things up too neatly, it’s a highly entertaining debut that shows real promise. Fans of The Hunger Games, Knives Out and Agatha Christie will feel right at home.
If the The Hunger Games and Glass Onion - A Knives Out Mystery: The Script (film version) had a baby, this would be it. Voyage of the Damned was part of my Illumicrate subscription and I was eager to get my hands on it - imagine a fateful trip with 12 young adults who find themselves trapped inside their luxury seaborne vessel as tragedy strikes. The perfect recipe for an enjoyable, if not addictive, read, right? In many ways, Voyage of the Damned succeeds at being just that, a read you cannot put down until you have unraveled all its mysteries and understood the motivations behind them. White gives you just enough clues to start concocting your own theories but never enough to be fully predictable - a difficult balance to strike. I found myself skipping meals, unable to stop reading until I could confirm or reject my initial hypothesis (I had to reject it in the end, which is good). What's more, White does a wonderful job bringing her main character to life: the protagonist turned lead-investigator, Ganymedes (or rather, Dee), is cheeky, relatable, insecure, and funny. Yes, he is occasionally cringe and not all of his jokes hit home, but this is exactly what renders Dee so charmingly human. Why, then, not give the book five stars? Voyage of the Damned is an impressive debut, but for my taste, it follows some of its literary 'predecessors' a little too closely for comfort in some aspects: Twelve provinces and a thirteenth one which was banished for doing things differently - The Hunger Games much. The worldbuilding more generally was a little too simplistic for my taste, given that the provinces are named after animals and that their respective inhabitants display certain characteristics of their namesakes both with regards to appearance and character. Similarly, the romantic elements evoked were too generic and did, in many instances, not feel natural (cringe much). At times, the book bites off a little more than it can chew: While it touches upon important topics (e.g., mental health), the solutions proposed seem all too easy. Particularly towards the end of the novel, there were several deus-ex-machina events to tie up all the loose ends. I believe that White could have dared to leave some issues unresolved - it would have added a degree of authenticity. All things considered, it is a highly entertaining read that, while not being perfect, clearly showcases White's potential and talent. If you are into the works of Agatha Christie, Delia Owens and J.K. Rowling, give this one a try - you will not be disappointed.

This book has everything a murder mystery needs: colorful characters (in every sense of the word), power struggle, political intrigues and of course romance and heartbreak (also many kinds of heartbreaks...). Even with a cliche Chess-Game and the villain monologuing their plan... Just wow 11/10, would recommend again!
I don't think 5/5 stars is enough for this book. I was supposed to read this in pace with the @illumicrate readalong, but I just couldn't stop. It's murder mystery, but also a whole rich worldbuilding. It's characters that are both soft and strong and so so adorable. And it's such a tight narrative with not an ounce of fat on it, but instead with a fast pace that still leaves room for all the feels.
Dee (my chaotic, food-loving, self-doubting baby), Grasshopper (adorbs 6-year old with a hunger for blood and biscuits) and Ravi (dark, brooding and oh so many secrets) are three of twelve Chosen Ones, all together on a ship for a ritualistic quest. And then there's murders and secrets and yes, even a murder wall. While they try to deduce and solve, the world around them is starting to crumble. None of the characters are purely black or white, good or evil. Many of them have a legacy they didn't ask for, and grief for things lost or not found. Amidst all this are themes of self-doubt, being different, embracing oneself and others, and lots of diversity. All mixed together in a story that will stay with you. 6/5 stars for this brilliant debut by @franceswhiteauthor
I’m obsessed! Heartbreak, intrigue, romance, magic, grief, a whole lot of murder, mystery, humor and a nice dose of found family. Clever twists, unique story arc, wonderful character development and incredible worldbuilding.

That was easily one of the best books I have ever read. First of all: the Humor. That was so funny! Also loved the magic system and the world but also loved the relationship in this book, love and also friend/ ally relationships, all of them were perfect Then it was really thrilling, I flew through the second half! Just everything I absolutely love
