Description

The action takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag, an Irish-speaking community in County Donegal. In a nearby field camps a recently arrived detachment of the Royal Engineers, making the first Ordnance Survey. For the purposes of cartography, the local Gaelic place names have to be recorded and rendered into English. In examining the effects of this operation on the lives of a small group, Brian Friel skillfully reveals the far-reaching personal and cultural effects of an action which is at first sight purely administrative.

Set in 1833 this book depicts the life of the people in the town of Ballybeg in County Donegal during the time of the English soldiers mapping out Ireland and anglicising the place names. Spoken in English but meant to be in Irish the play is about the hardships of life, love and how we connect through language even when we don't understand each other.

Even though this book just has 91 pages, the characters grew on me in that short time. The book was interesting and the plot went into a direction I did not expect at all. Definitely recommending this one! Loved it.
