Das hat Spaß gemacht.
Wer auf Fantasy im Militärkontext steht und dabei auch mal ein anderes Setting als das mittelalterliche Europa erkunden möchte, ist hier genau richtig. Die ganze Story spielt sich innerhalb einer militärischen Einheit ab, die Protagonisten sind Teil davon, allerdings jeweils aus unterschiedlichen hierarchischen Rängen. Es geht um innermilitärische Machenschaften und Intrigen, Krieg und einen Hauch von Magie sowie der Jagd nach magischen Artefakten. Das Ganze liest sich super schnell runter und ich mochte die Charaktere sehr. Tatsächlich habe ich gehofft, dass sich die beiden früher mal über den Weg laufen, schließlich sind sie Teil der gleichen Armee und in den selben Kämpfen beteiligt, haben aufgrund ihrer unterschiedlichen Ränge dann allerdings doch keine Berührungspunkte. Romance gabs soweit keine und wenn dann nur sooo minimal angedeutet, dass ich sie nicht als solches deutend würde. Was aber mal eine schöne Abwechslung war, denn - Überraschung - es geht auch ohne! ;) Ob ich die Reihe tatsächlich weiter lesen werde, lasse ich mal offen. Die ist nämlich tatsächlich relativ lang inzwischen und obwohl mir das hier sehr gut gefallen hat, hab ich einfach so viele andere angefangene Reihen auf der Warteliste. War aber auf jeden Fall mal eine sehr gut Abwechslung
German Review on GosuReviews Another great debut novel this year, definitely one of my favorites. After the introduction of the two main POV characters and a bit of worldbuilding the story picks up pace and we get nearly non stop action in form of very well written battle scenes, that are fought in 19th century military style with muskets and cannons. The magic aspect is fortunately held low in this series, so that we don't have wizards battling everything out and decide about win or lose. With both strong male and female characters, a well thought out world and a good structured story it was a great read and I can highly recommend this novel, one of the best in 2013 and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
