The Salt Grows Heavy

I‘m not fully sure I understand what even the story was. The writing style was beautiful (I think), but at times so flowery I had to re-read sentences multiple times. I guess my expectations were all wrong, going into this.

Gory and beautiful

Indeed, it's a hard read with all the gorgeous writing, words that are hardly in daily use, but it was the glue that held this gory, beautiful, whimsical story together. English is not my first language, but I speak it on native level and truthfully I had to Google a lot of words, and while that might be cumbersome, the whole story is set in a mythical, fairytale-ish world where sirens, selkies, kelpies and resurrectionists all exist and abide by no "happily ever after", so the words just seemed appropriate. I loved the darkness of it but still would have enjoyed a bit more explanation as to what really happened in the past. The motive I get, both the mermaid's and the plague doctor's , but a bit more detail would have been much appreciated. But all in all, a great read!

Tbh, I'm not entirely sure if I understood this. The writing is rich and gorgeous, but hard to follow at times, especially if English isn't your first language. Also I didn't realise how gory this horror novel would be. It's actually pretty disgusting at times.

🌟🌟🌟 Ich bin mir sehr unsicher über meine Meinung zu diesem Buch. Man wird sehr planlos in eine Situation geschmissen und das ganze Buch lang wird nicht wirklich viel erklärt. Die Beweggründe der Charaktere sind nicht nachvollziehbar. Insgesamt hat mich das Buch aber fasziniert und ich fand es spannend. Da das Buch sehr kurz ist, sollte man es einfach mal ausprobieren, wenn man gerne Horror liest und auch Body Horror und Gore einem liegen. Edit 2. Read: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Nachdem ich das Buch letztes Jahr gelesen habe, ging es mir einfach nicht aus dem Kopf und ich musste es mir unbedingt nochmal beschaffen und lesen. Weiterhin bin ich der Meinung, dass es ein sehr spezielles Buch ist. Gerade der Schreibstil ist sehr ungewöhnlich und teilweise schwer zu verfolgen. Beim zweiten lesen konnte ich mich aber sehr viel mehr auf die Geschichte und die Charaktere einlassen und ich finde das Buch einfach faszinierend. Gerade die Beziehung zwischen dem Plague Doctor und der Meerjungfrau hat mich beim erneuten lesen unfassbar fasziniert. Ich hatte super viel Spaß beim Reread und werde das Buch dieses Mal auf jeden Fall behalten!

A weird collection of big words. Ich hatte keine Ahnung, was mich in diesem Buch erwartet und wäre es länger gewesen, hätte ich es wohl auch nicht durchgelesen. Horror und ein Haufen fancy Wörter… definitiv anders, aber nicht unbedingt gut. (Für mich!)
