Maybe the best premise and first chapter I've ever read. The character study of henchard was well done: i disliked him, i was annoyed by him, i was even rooting for him to fail but i also pitied him. however, many side characters were flat and boring (especially the women). Overall still a good reading experience. I will definitely try another hardy book soon!
