Magda is a writer, Emerence her housekeeper. Magda is new to their quiet Hungarian town, while Emerence, fierce and enigmatic, knows and is known by all. Though Emerence enters Magda's home whenever she pleases, the door to Emerence's own strange abode remains barred. Still, somehow, over the course of twenty years, an intimate trust is built between the two, rich with shared confidences.

Ich finde es sehr schwer, das Buch zu bewerten. Mal denke ich, es sind 5 Sterne, mal denke ich, es ist 1 Stern. Das Buch ist für mich schon besonders gewesen, es ist gleichzeitig ernst und dennoch war es manchmal, als würde ich Slapstick lesen. Positiv finde ich die Darstellung der Gegebenheiten Ungarns zu der Zeit, in den Sinne, dass ich wieder etwas neues gelernt habe. Negativ ist für mich die Darstellung der "Liebe" zwischen den beiden Frauen. Ich denke nicht, dass es Liebe war. Für mich ging es zu viel um Machtausübung, Kontrolle und Manipulation. Und damit konnte ich nicht wirklich etwas anfangen. Nach dem Lesen lässt mich das Buch etwas ratlos zurück.
