Rating: 3.5 I did enjoy the seeing the 1910s from another perspective than a rich white damsel in distress, and yet it felt a bit messy with the sheer number of characters that the book focused on. There were four main POVs, each with their own love/hate messy love interest, which ended up being a little tiring to follow through. And then the ending, it was left so open that it made me want to eat the damn book (alas it was an ebook).

Was das Buch neben dem Setting im Chicago des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts für mich so einzigartig gemacht hat war, dass es 4 Erzählstränge bzw. 4 POVs gibt und ich in jeden gleich investiert war. Im Normalfall bin ich in dem Fall in eine Person richtig investiert und die anderen lese ich etwas schneller. Hier habe ich bei Olivia, Helen, Amy-Rose und Ruby genau gleich viel mitgefiebert und -gefühlt. Das Setting und die Themen - Liebe, Gender Rollen, Erwartungen der Eltern, Rasse, Klassizismus, und viel mehr - sind wirklich interessant and ebenso einzigartig. Ich habe noch kaum etwas historisches gelesen, das eine schwarze, erfolgreiche, reiche Familie in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Allerdings hätte ich mir noch mehr historisches gewünscht, da das Buch dafür noch mehr Möglichkeiten geboten hätte. Generell verläuft die Geschichte eher langsam und irgendwie passiert allen 4en mehr oder weniger immer das selbe zur selben Zeit, wenn es um die Liebe geht. Das hat den Romance Part für mich irgendwie ein bisschen fad gemacht. Das Ende hat mich leider auch etwas verwirrt und unbefriedigt zurückgelassen. Es gibt meiner Meinung nach noch so viele offene Dinge, die nicht abgeschlossen wurden. Vielleicht gibt es ja einen 2. Teil, in dem das aufgeklärt wird?
