Daughters' War ist das Sequel von Blacktongue Thief, das die Vorgeschichte von Galva dom Braga als Soldatin im dritten Goblinkrieg, dem gleichnamigen Daughters' War, behandelt. In einem Interview sagte der Autor Christopher Buehlman, dass er kein Sequel zu Blacktongue Thief schreiben wollte, bevor die Leser*innen nicht zuvor auch Galvas Geschichte lesen konnen. Und auch, wenn ich gespannt bin, wie es nach Blacktongue Thief weitergeht, war das aus meiner Sicht die einzig richtige Entscheidung! Galva bekommt als Protagonistin und Erzählerin weitaus mehr Tiefe, als dies als Nebenfigur in Teil 1 möglich war. Statt in einer klassischen Heldenreise finden wir uns in einem brutalen Krieg der Menschen gegen grausame Goblinhorden wieder. Bei der Schilderung der Kämpfe und Schlachten merkt man, dass Buehlman aus dem Horror-Genre kommt: Die Goblins sind sehr detailliert und glaubwürdig als grausame Erzfeinde der Menschen beschrieben und man glaubt der Geschichte, dass hier das Schicksal der Menschheit auf dem Spiel steht. Die Geschichte ist spannend und herzzerreißend. Die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen, die Buehlman zwischen Galva und ihrer Familie sowie ihren Mitkämpferinnen zeichnet, sind glaubwürdig, abwechslungsreich und stellen noch einmal eine Steigerung zum ersten Teil dar: Man hat mit Galva geliebt, gelitten und gehasst. Ich konnte Daughters' War nicht aus der Hand legen und hoffe, dass es bald einen dritten Teil als Fortsetzung von Blacktongue Thief geben wird.
Very good dark high-fantasy war novel
A very good dark high-fantasy war novel. As the title suggests, it deals almost exclusively with a war story. The fact that it nevertheless drew me in so strongly—despite being a committed pacifist with a deep skepticism toward any potential romanticization of war—is due entirely to Christopher Buehlman’s outstanding prose and his ability to tell emotionally moving stories. At times the novel is extremely dark, but the author masterfully offsets this with black humor, which occasionally manifests in rough, coarse language, and creates powerful contrasts by also knowing how to depict genuinely beautiful scenes. I personally preferred The Blacktongue Thief even more, as its story felt somewhat more varied, but the writing style is excellent in both.
