The Bonus

Das Buch habe ich bei Seite 201 abgebrochen und kann schon mal eins klar sagen: Es ist wirklich grottenschlecht. 💩 🚨 Achtung Spoiler🚨 In aller Kürze: Die Geschichte startet auf der ersten Seite damit, dass die Hauptprotagonistin Grace erzählt, dass sie auf ihren Boss steht, obwohl er ein MEGA Arschloch ist. Und schwupps nach ein paar Seiten kündigt sie bei ihm und will umziehen. Die Folge der Kündigung ist, dass sie miteinander schlafen. Weil er ein riesiges Arschloch ist, sagt er ihr danach, dass er nicht mit ihr zusammen sein kann, weil sie keine Italienerin ist. Und natürlich ghostet er sie direkt. Als Grace dann umzieht, hat er plötzlich völlig unnachvollziehbaren Liebeskummer. Also bitte, hä, wo liebt er sie denn? Er war nicht ein einziges Mal nett zu ihr? Und wie es kommen muss, wird sie von diesem einen Mal schwanger. Sie verheimlicht ihm die Kinder (Zwillinge) jahrelang und irgendwann kommt alles ans Licht. Bis dahin habe ich gelesen und finde es schrecklich. Die Charaktere sind einfach nur nervig und flach. Die Verbindung zwischen Grace und Gabriel kann man überhaupt nicht nachvollziehen. Es ist mir ein Rätsel, was in den 644 Seiten bitte noch passieren soll. Vom Schreibstil her hätte das mein 15 jähriges Ich schreiben können. Ich habe sogar überlegt, ob es vielleicht an der Übersetzung liegen könnte, weil auch viele Rechtschreibfehler eingebaut wurden. Aber na ja…ich werde es DANKEND nie erfahren.

"and I think telling people their worth is immeasurable is one hell of a way to feel alive" Actual rating: 4,5 stars Content warnings - negative body image, esp. weight/shape (in "all the broken mirrors" and "the struggle to be") - blood (mentioned in "no make up? you look tired") - slightly sexual content (in "asexual") - hints of emotional abuse (in "conversations with my parents" and "what you broke") My opinion A lovely poetry collection. Shelby Lafreniere put those words together so beautifully in a very personal, touching way I enjoyed a lot while reading the poems. Two or three of them seemed kind of empty to me (aka I couldn't make much of them, which doesn't mean they're bad, they just weren't for me), but most were the opposite – meaningful, deep, emotional. Words that will stay with me for a long time probably. Bonus points for diversity. Poems about diverse bodies and body image, poems mentioning different sexualities and genders, written by a marginalized author. What's not to adore? I only wish the content warnings would've been more explicit, there is some triggering stuff in there (which did not affect me luckily, but I would have liked to be warned about it).
