The Bone Houses

Hach, das war ein richtig tolles Buch! Ich mochte wirklich alles, die Charaktere, die Beziehungen, die disability rep, die walisische Folklore, den Schreibstil, die ZIEGE! 🐐 Einfach ein richtig schönes, historisches Horror-Fantasy Buch. Am meisten begeistert hat mich wahrscheinlich die Art, wie Ryn und Ellis miteinander umgegangen sind. Es war so aufrichtig, ehrlich und wertschätzend! Niemand sollte verbogen werden oder sich ändern müssen, sie haben sich einfach so genommen, wie sie waren. Auch der Umgang mit Ellis' Behinderung war meiner Meinung nach richtig gut und realistisch. Für mich persönlich war der Gruselfaktor genau richtig, aber eingefleischte Horrorfans werden es wahrscheinlich etwas lasch finden 🙈 es ist aber auch YA, da darf man nicht mit zu krassen Sachen rechnen denke ich. Apropos YA - was das angeht bin ich mittlerweile echt etwas empfindlich weil ich mich da oft nicht wiederfinde in dem Teenage Drama, aber hier hat mich nichts gestört, ich fand's super cute. Stilistisch ließ es sich schön und flüssig lesen und auch das Pacing war nach meinem Geschmack. Es hätte für mich aber ruhig noch eine Spur komplexer sein können, die Auflösung am Ende fand ich zwar stimmig und schön, aber tieferliegende Mythen etc hätte ich auch spannend gefunden. Insgesamt also ein perfektes Buch für den spooky Herbst, mit leichtem Gruselfaktor, cozy vibes, tollen Beziehungen und eine loyalen Zombieziege ✌🏻😁

For a second there, I considered giving it four instead of five stars, but if the only complaint you have, is that it could have been longer, … well that ain’t not reason to kill of a star in the rating. This story follows a female gravedigger and a mapmaker with chronic pain (personally I think the portrayal of someone with chronic pain was spot on, thank the author for that!), that meet by chance and are entangled by fate soon enough. Oh and a goat. But more on it a bit later. Ryn and her two siblings didn’t have the easiest of lives, but by sticking together, they managed to keep at it and not be torn apart, even after losing both their parents and an ignorant uncle that only drove them into more despair by amassing a gambling dead. While Ryn tries to make some more money with helping the stranger/mapmaker Ellis, the town is thrown into more issues, when all of the sudden bone houses come out of the woods and attack. Sadly the family goat is amongst the victims of the attack, but true to stubborn form, it does not stay dead. Now a bone house goat, it keeps following Ellis and Ryn on their journey to find and destroy the cauldron that started the curse, which made the dead somewhat “alive” again. This book gave me more than I anticipated. It had to protagonists that were both looking for answers and both findig them in their own ways, a stubborn and very loyal goat, fantastical creatures, strong family bonds, and the moral, that sometimes in order to live, you have to finally let go of the dead and let them truly rest. I really, really loved this book and cannot wait to read even more written by the author.

Unterhaltsam

Charaktere waren gut und die Dynamik zwischen ihnen schön. Aber die Story war es irgendwie nicht

Ein YA-Buch, das keine Reihe ist? Ist unterdessen selten geworden. Vor allem, wenn es sich dabei auch noch um Fantasy handelt und nicht um ein allgemeines Thema. Lloyd-Jones nimmt sich des Zombie-Themas mal von einer ganz anderen Seite an und arbeitet das auch sehr gut aus. Die Figuren mögen aus der Masse zwar nicht gross herausstechen, aber eigentlich müssen sie das auch nicht. Für die Dauer des Buches ist man nämlich gerne mit ihnen zusammen und harrt gemeinsam den düsteren Dingen, die da kommen mögen. Am liebsten mochte ich tatsächlich die Ziege als Side-Kick. Das ist speziell, denn ich mag Ziegen nicht. Ich fürchte mich entsetzlich vor ihnen und will so weit weg wie möglich von ihnen sein. Aber die hier ist richtig cool. Ich müsste nicht in einem Zimmer mit ihr sein, aber von ihren Abenteuern zu hören, hat mir richtig Spass gemacht.
