His stomach stabs and twists inside, pleading for a meal, but Matt won’t give in. The hunger clears his mind, keeps him sharp—and he needs to be as sharp as possible if he’s going to find out just how Tariq and his band of high school bullies drove his sister, Maya, away.Matt’s hardworking mom keeps the kitchen crammed with food, but Matt can resist the siren call of casseroles and cookies because he has discovered something: the less he eats the more he seems to have . . . powers. The ability to see things he shouldn’t be able to see. The knack of tuning in to thoughts right out of people’s heads. Maybe even the authority to bend time and space. So what is lunch, really, compared to the secrets of the universe?Matt decides to infiltrate Tariq’s life, then use his powers to uncover what happened to Maya. All he needs to do is keep the hunger and longing at bay. No problem. But Matt doesn’t realize there are many kinds of hunger…and he isn’t in control of all of them.A darkly funny, moving story of body image, addiction, friendship, and love, Sam J. Miller’s debut novel will resonate with any reader who’s ever craved the power that comes with self-acceptance.

The Art of Starving is one of those rare books that grabs you by the heart and doesn’t let go. I just finished reading it, and I can honestly say it was an emotional rollercoaster in the best and most painful way possible. Following Matt on his journey - through hunger, grief, anger, love, self-discovery and self-destruction...it was both harrowing and beautiful. His voice is raw and sharp, full of pain and longing, but also filled with a quiet, fierce hope that slowly emerges over the course of the novel. The way Sam J. Miller weaves queerness, mental health, magical realism, and deep emotional truths together is truly masterful. And the ending? It absolutely broke me...and yet, somehow, it left me whole. It’s one of those rare conclusions that is both devastating and healing at the same time. I closed the book feeling shattered, yet strangely at peace. It was fantastic - no other word fits better. If you're looking for a book that is powerful, deeply human, and unlike anything you've read before, The Art of Starving is it.

4.3 ☆ „I rolled down the window and sniffed the air and cried, because love was magic but it was not enough to soothe my sickness, my hunger, and nothing would ever be enough“ this book was a rollercoaster tbh I liked the beginning then I didn’t liked it then I liked it again and I don’t know but the more I think about this book the more I think it was amazing. I actually had to stop reading a few times cause it made me cry so much. The writing is pretty simple but I think that fits the book really well. Also I love Maya and would love to see a whole book about her ngl.

Half way through I actually thought this book was getting better but then he controlled an army of pigs with his supernatural sense of smell. What the actual fuck.
