Ich liebe dieses Buch. Der erste Band war schon gut, aber was bitte wäre Danika und Zafir für ein Paar? Academic / Sports Romance, quirky und grumpy, und vor allem wie häufig ist es der Male Protagonist, der mit anxiety kämpft?
Außerdem ein paar meiner favorite Tropes versammelt : He falls first Fake Dating Female sex positivity Feminist main character Bisexual main character
Look, I get it. I constantly preach romance novels that have actual role models instead of stereotypical characters. Dani and Zaf are PoC characters written by a PoC author, Dan is bisexual and ambitious and won’t take BS from men, and Zaf actually talks about his panic attacks and mental health struggles (at least to the people he is close with) and Dani even does some research about how to support someone when they have an active panic attack. That’s great and all, but at the same time these characters are still so stereotypical. Dani is just the reverse white guy who “doesn’t do relationships” but denies that her commitment phobia comes from not having been treated right in the past. Enter THE ONE who is so different from all the others, very attractive but downplays it, and willing to “squeeze through the bars of the mental cage” (Ch. 10) if only she’d let him in. At this point I’d been rolling my eyes so hard multiple times. The fact that you have diverse characters doesn’t just create a good story on its own, unfortunately. Also, the writing isn’t good. It’s super graphic and off-putting and very in your face about the messages the author wants to drive home.
So this book definitely took me by surprise not only in the manner I completely inhaled the entirety of it. Picked it up, had no recollection of why I had added it to the library in the first place, but it somehow felt right for the moment and right it was! Already a fifth in, I noticed that it unfortunately was the second part of a series but for the enjoyment of this book alone it didn’t have a negative effect for me at all. I enjoyed watching Danika grow into her emotions tremendously, as she’s such a fierce and strong woman and just had to learn to allow others to take care of her as well, sometimes. Zaf, with his kind, kind heart and the lessons he learned from his past, but still more applies to his trainees than to himself, also needed Dani so much – watching them grow together in more sense than one was simply so heartwarming. This book also made me cry more times than I wanted to count – because it was so beautifully written and also had some really heartfelt passages on grief and the journey after loss. Safe to say, I devoured this book and onto the “Comfort Book” shelf it goes for me. This is a recommendation I’ll gladly dish out to everyone loving romances, as it’s so genuine and cute and comforting and simply a really good read.

Januar 2022 Auf Amazon wird „Chasing Dani Brown” als “BookTok Erfolg in den USA“ beworben. Und ich war auch begeistert, dass die Reihe übersetzt wird. In Band 1 begleiten wir die chronisch kranke Chloe Brown, und da ich selbst eine chronische Krankheit freue, habe ich mich sehr über die Repräsentation gefreut. Aber so richtig umgehauen hat mich die Geschichte nicht. Die Geschichte um Dani und Zaf hat mir jedoch deutlich besser gefallen. Talia Hibbert hat eine Reihe voller diverser Protagonisten geschaffen: Dani Brown ist bisexuell, eine Person of Colour, und eine praktizierende Hexe. Zafs Familie stammt aus Pakistan, er ist kein praktizierender Muslim (mehr), ehemaliger Profisportler und jetzt leidenschaftlicher Liebesroman-Leser. Das Thema Mental Health spielt in diesem Buch auch eine extrem große Rolle. Wie gesagt ist Zaf ein Ex-Profi im Rugbysport, und mittlerweile arbeitet er an der Uni, an der Dani lehrt, als Security-Guard. In seiner Freizeit ist er jedoch Trainer einer Rugbymannschaft und macht zusätzlich zum sportlichen Training auch Einheiten zu mentaler und emotionaler Gesundheit. Ein Thema ist z.B., dass die Jungs ihre Verletzlichkeit offen zeigen sollen. Als Trope haben wir hier Fake Dating, und ich bin ein großer Fan von Fake Dating. Dieses Buch hat in der Hinsicht auch nicht enttäuscht. Es kommt zu einem Missverständnis, durch das andere Personen denken, Zaf und Dani wären ein Paar, und auch der #DrRugBae (Dr weil Dani grade ihren PhD macht, Rug für Rugby und Bae wegen… bae = before anyone else) im Internet trendet. Die beiden nutzen das dann aber aus, da Dani keine Zeit für eine echte Beziehung hat und so ungezwungen Spaß haben kann, und für Zafs Organisation so gute Publicity entsteht. Die Motive der beiden sind logisch und schlüssig, und es macht einfach Sinn, dass sie so tun als wären sie ein Paar. Ich habe bei dem Buch auch extrem viel gelacht. Besonders bei Zaf. Denn Zaf ist bis jetzt DER Bookboyfriend diesen Monat. Er ist so unglaublich verständnisvoll, hört zu und unterstützt Dani in den verschiedensten Situationen durch alle möglichen Gesten oder aufmunternden Worte. Die Nebencharaktere, besonders Zafs Familie, fand ich extrem gut ausgearbeitet und habe mich immer gefreut, wenn sie vorgekommen sind. Nur der Schreibstil ist nicht mein Fall. Besonders die erotischen Szenen fand ich vulgär und „unsexy“. Das kann an der deutschen Übersetzung liegen, aber vielleicht wäre es mir im Original auch negativ aufgefallen. Abgesehen vom Stil habe ich hier aber nichts zu meckern und gebe 4 von 5 Sternen!
I read quite a few great books this year but this one absolutely touched and resonated with me the most. I don't think I can properly articulate how much it means to me, a bisexual woman dating a man, to read about someone like me in a romance novel. A lot of things about both characters and their relationship resonated with my own experiences and touched me greatly. But even apart from that, the book has so many other great qualities. The dialogues and honestly all writing was so fun and I love that important social issues got picked up and talked about. The main characters were great and funny and unique but still relatable and had a lot of chemistry and i adored the lovable cast of side characters. I couldn't give this book any less than 5 stars, I think it might even be my book of the year or at least one of the books I hold closest to my heart.
i liked this one more than the first book! the fake dating trope was amazing and the characters were really relatable. i love danika so so much and she's so iconic mwah the last argument was again kinda unnecessary and the plot was predictable but i still enjoyed it and it's so far my favourite one :)
Ich liebe, liebe, liebe diese Reihe. Schon "Kissing Chloe Brown" habe ich verschlungen. Auf die deutsche Übersetzung des zweiten Teils konnte und wollte ich nicht warten. Deswegen habe ich den zweiten Teil auf Englisch bestellt - und ebenfalls verschlungen. Wann hat mich ein Buch das letzte Mal auf diese Art begeistert? Ich kann es euch nicht sagen. Aber ich brauche Teil 3 und zwar so schnell wie möglich. Dani macht gerade ihren Phd in Literaturwissenschaft (KREISCH!!!) und arbeitet als Dozentin an der Uni. Allein damit hatte das Buch schon meine Aufmerksamkeit. Eine Protagonistin, die sich im gleichen Fachgebiet rumtreibt wie ich? Solche Details liebe ich, da kann ich mich dann immer so schön mit der Figur identifizieren. Aufgrund ihrer Arbeit hat Dani ziemlich viel Stress - und beschränkt sich deswegen auf unverbindliche Beziehungen, auf Freundschaft Plus. Für eine echte Beziehung hat sie keine Zeit. Und sie hat auch gar kein Interesse an sowas! Beziehungen sind ihrer Meinung nach nur anstrengend und sorgen dafür, dass sie sich als jemand ausgeben muss, der sie nicht ist und das will sie nicht mehr. Deswegen hat sie sich auch von Jo getrennt, einer Arbeitskollegin, der eine Freundschaft Plus irgendwann einfach nicht mehr reichte. Doch das ist nun schon wieder mehrere Monate her, deswegen bittet Dani eine Göttin um einen perfekten Partner für eine Freundschaft Plus - und kurz darauf wird sie von Zaf aus einem Aufzug gerettet. Und das wird gefilmt und landet online und geht viral. Zaf ist ein Securitymann der Uni und ein ehemaliger Rugby-Spieler. Die Aufmerksamkeit online macht ihm Angst. Er leidet sowieso schon an einer Angststörung, also ist das nicht ideal. Doch er weiß, dass er diese Aufmerksamkeit nutzen sollte. Immerhin hat er einen wohltätigen Rugby-Verein für Jugendliche gegründet und ist immer auf der Suche nach Sponsoren. Also beschließen Dani und Zaf der ganzen Welt die perfekte Beziehung vorzuspielen... Ich liebe alles an diesem Buch. Jede Seite davon hat mich begeistert. Ich habe mich so unglaublich wohl mit dieser Geschichte gefühlt. Die Protagonisten sind unglaublich liebevoll gestaltet und ich habe jede Sekunde genossen, die ich in dieser Welt verbringen durfte. Mein Fazit? Ich wünschte, dieses Buch wäre doppelt so dick. Ich brauche mehr davon. Viel mehr!
Something you need to know about me is that, even though I am a pretty fast reader, usually it takes me a few days to finish a book, even if it's not that long. So for me to say that I finished this book in one single day really shows you how delightful this book was. It completely hooked me, and I could not stop reading until I was completely done. One of the main reasons for that are the two main characters. Dani is simply a delight to read about, and Zaf ... you mean to tell me we have a love interest who a) has anxiety, which I can relate to A LOT, b) talks about his feelings and does not shy away from showing them as well, no toxic masculinity in sight, c) actually reads romance novels, and d) is an actually kind, and thoughtful man, who EVERYONE would fall in love with??? Absolutely stunning, amazing, showstopping, spectacular, we absolutely stan and we love to see it. I have not one single complaint about this book; even the "conflict" portion was well done, and resolved very nicely, and also according to the characters' wants and needs, which I loved. I read the first book in the Brown sisters series last year and enjoyed it immensely, so I can't wait to be able to read the next book in the series!!
