When I found out this was the book Katy and Daemon‘s fake identities were from I had to read it. To enjoy this you have to realise that it was written in 2012 and that it comes with all the fun tropes from back then. Since I don’t mind clichees and looked past some cringey scenes, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I embraced the tropes and liked the broody, mysterious love interest. He introduced her to the world of the Neph and her live was bound to change forever… Jap that’s how this story goes and I am not ashamed to admit that I liked it. Kaidan Rowe is literally Lust incarnate and he is aware of that, which of course makes him super cocky and overly confident. Some parts of the book he was super dreamy and others he was like „You have to accept that I am not good, don’t trick yourself into thinking that I am, just cause I am doing this for you“. Boy you ain’t fooled nobody. The moment he got to really know Anna my mans fell hard. You are supposed to second guess his motives and all, but in reality he is a real softie and just needs love. Anna is such a good girl. I feel like her innocence plays into the story a lot so it makes sense.Her not having lied ONCE in her life is kinda overdoing it for me, but again not letting that dull my enjoyment. I did like her character. She wasn’t faking being a good girl and had actual reasoning for everything she did. I like the lore of this story a lot. A lot happened in the first book, still everything was paced well in my opinion. Good and Evil in this book are very clearly divided and I actually had hoped for a bit more of a question if the angels have the right motives. Anna being religious wasn’t pushed to much and in the given context it only makes sense that she never questions gods motives. Still I wish the whole good and evil thing was a bit more blurry, but maybe that’s just me. I loved the little roadtrip and although I don’t believe in falling in love over a weekend,again, in giving context I was fine with it. I loved the way Kaidan and Anna couldn’t help but strike a connection. This book gave me what I was looking for. It wasn’t a crazy plot or incredibly well written. It gave me the nostalgia of reading back when I was younger and for that I couldn’t help but enjoy this book. The brooding male love interest always helps lol
This book was really good. I love the take on demon and sins as humans (albeit possessed by demons) and guardian angels. It's really beautiful. The writing makes it easy to read the book fast and the topic is well explored. The characters are close to the reader and easy to understand. Even the Dukes are, because we all know evil and it's attraction, even if we don't act on it, like Anna does. The story is really beautiful. It starts out as hopeful and sweet with the trip to LA but then takes a turn for the worse about midway through. Because life isn't sunshine and roses for a sweet character, it's hard and sometimes that needs to be shown in a hard way. The author did a wonderful job in introducing this world and these characters that are so easy to love.
Anna ist ein aussergewöhnliches Mädchen, das kurz vor ihrem 16. Geburtstag steht. Und nicht etwa die Tatsache, dass sie sehr religiös ist, keinen Alkohol trinkt und keinen Sex vor der Ehe will, sind schuld daran, sondern ihre besonderen Fähigkeiten: Sie kann die Emotionen von anderen Leuten sehen und zwar durch eine farbige Aura, die sie umgibt. Ausserdem sind ihre Sinne geschärft, so dass sie aussergewöhnlich gut hören, sehen und riechen kann. Obwohl sie sich diesen Fähigkeiten immer bewusst war, konnte sie sich erst einen Reim darauf machen, als sie eines Tages bei einem Bandauftritt der Band Lascivious den Drummer Kaidan trifft. Er klärt sie sehr bald schon einmal darüber auf, was sie ist: Ein Nephilim - halb Engel, halb Dämon. Natürlich hat Anna nach dieser Erkenntnis sehr viele Fragen, die ihr kein geringerer, als ihr Dämonenvater beantworten kann. Leider sitzt der noch in Los Angeles in Haft, so dass Kaidan und Anna sicher kurzerhand auf einen Road Trip, quer durch die USA begeben. Und dabei kommen sich die beiden immer näher... Die Autorin hat mit Engeln, Dämonen und Nephilim sicher nichts Neues geschaffen und trotzdem hat mich die Geschichte sehr bald in ihren Bann gezogen. Das lag in erster Linie an Kaidan, denn ich liebe solche Bad Boy Charaktere einfach. Anna ergeht es da nichts anders, auch wenn ich mich immer wieder fragen musste, was Kaidan in ihr sieht. Durch ihre prüde Art und die ständige Betonung, wie schlimm Alkohol ist, hatte ich nicht selten den Eindruck, dass die Autorin eine Art Moralkeule schwingen möchte. Und das empfand ich als ziemlich nervig. Ausserdem konnte ich mich mit Anna so gar nicht identifizieren, denn mit Religion habe ich absolut nichts am Hut, ebenso wenig wie ihre total veralteten Einstellungen zu Ehe und Sex. Das alles hat Anna zu einer Art Mary Sue gemacht und mir haben einige Ecken und Kanten gefehlt, schliesslich ist niemand perfekt. Alles in allem konnte mich die Geschichte aber gut unterhalten, auch wenn es manchmal etwas an Spannung fehlte. Das Ende hat mich gerade deshalb etwas überrumpelt, doch es verspricht, dass es in Band 2 spannend werden wird. Für den Folgeband bleibt also noch etwas Luft nach oben und wenn ich die Kurzmeinungen und die Bewertungen von Band 2 anschaue, scheint die Autorin das auch tatsächlich geschafft zu haben. Ich bin gespannt!
Kurz-Meinung: Die Idee um die Dämonenlords und die Nephilim fand ich total gut. Ich möchte hier nicht zu viel verraten, aber das Konzept fand ich sehr originell. Aber irgendwie fehlte mir etwas bei den Charakteren. Man hatte das Gefühl keinen so richtig zu kennen und immer wenn man sich wünschte es würde sich etwas zwischen den Charakteren entwickeln und etwas mehr Licht ins Ganze bringen, da war es auch schon wieder vorbei. Die weibliche Hauptperson ist ziemlich nervig durch ihre Perfektion und moralischen Vorstellungen. Das wird zwar alles begründet, aber trotzdem wirkte sie mir dadurch oft zu naiv. Die anderen Nephilim waren sehr individuell und interessant. Kaiden ist ein toller männlicher Charakter für ein Jugendbuch. Der typische Badboy mit weichem Kern. Seine 'Aufgabe' hat es allerdings sehr schwierig gemacht sich etwas angenehmes oder positives in seiner Beziehung zu Anna vorzustellen. Die ganze angedeutete Liebesgeschichte war daher eher deprimierend. Das ist wohl auch mein Hauptproblem mit dem Buch und der Grund warum ich nicht sofort zu Teil 2 greifen werde. Trotzdem möchte ich zum Schluss nochmal erwähnen, das die Grundhandlung um die Dämonenlords und ihre Nephilim wirklich toll war und auch die Geschichte um Anna und ihre 'Familie“. Irgendwann werde ich sicher auch dem zweiten Teil eine Chance geben.
