Mages of the Wheel: Storm and Shield completely blew me away—honestly, I loved it even more than the first book, which was already a favorite. This second book took everything great about the series and leveled it up, with some bold choices that really paid off. What I Loved 1. Shifting focus to side characters: One of the best parts about this book was how it moved away from the main squad and put the spotlight on characters who were more in the background before. That was such a refreshing change! Instead of just rehashing the same dynamics, we got to see something new, which kept things fresh and exciting. 2. Cleaner writing style: The writing in this one felt a lot tighter and more polished compared to the first book. Without needing to spend time on worldbuilding (since that was all set up in book one), the story could dive right into the action and character development. It made the whole experience feel more streamlined and focused. 3. Unique dynamic between the leads: Just like in the first book, the relationship dynamic here really stood out, but it was completely different from the first couple’s vibe. I adored the playful chemistry between the two leads—it felt fun and genuine. I also appreciated how the author addressed possessiveness: the female lead called it out as unacceptable, and the male lead actually apologized. That’s such a rare, refreshing twist in Romantasy! Instead of the overdone “I can change him” trope, the theme was more like, “This is who we are—can we make it work?” 4. An unconventional male lead: The male lead was such a nice change from the usual broody, emotionally unavailable types. He took his time figuring out his feelings, but once he did, he was fully committed. As a Bashir fan, I might be biased (he reminds me so much of my stubborn husband!), but I found him incredibly endearing and relatable. 5. A relatable heroine: The female protagonist struck a great balance. Sure, she was the classic “Chosen One,” but she also had relatable struggles with self-doubt and commitment issues. That made her feel grounded and real, which I really appreciated. 6. Strong friendship vibes: I loved how the author leaned into the friendship side of the main couple’s relationship. It gave their bond so much depth and made their connection feel more authentic. What Didn’t Work as Well 1. The first couple’s relationship drama: The one thing that bothered me was the way the couple from the first book was handled. Having just read the first one, the sudden trust issues in their relationship felt off and didn’t align with the dynamic and trust they’d built. I get that it was needed for this book’s plot, but it still felt out of character. 2. The protagonist’s relationship with his mother: This part was just… uncomfortable. I didn’t enjoy reading those interactions, and they felt cringy compared to the rest of the book. I think this aspect could’ve been handled differently or toned down. Final Thoughts Mages of the Wheel: Storm and Shield is an amazing sequel that builds on everything the first book did right while bringing new twists and perspectives. The playful yet meaningful connection between the leads and the fresh take on common tropes made it such a standout read.
