Historically very little is known about Spartacus. We know that he came from Thrace, a land north of Greece, that he once fought in the Roman legions and that, during two fateful years, he led a slave army which nearly brought Rome to its knees.

Ben Kane was born in Kenya and raised there and in Ireland. He studied veterinary medicine and University College, Dublin, but after that he travelled the world extensively, indulging in his passion for ancient history. He lives in North Somerset with his wife and two young children.

Eine solide Geschichte, die mir sofort Lust gemacht hat, auf Netflix Spartacus Blood and Sand zu gucken. Leider finde ich die Serie aber auch besser als das Buch - es bleibt zwar spannend und zumindest für meine Kenntnisse römischer Geschichte (zugegeben nur die eines interessierten Laien mit vielen Italienaufenthalten) korrekt nach der Quellenlage. Die Figuren kommen jedoch etwas zu kurz, vor allem dank der Perspektive. Hauptsächlich gibt es also Kämpfe und ab Mitte des Buches Schlachten. "The Gladiator" ist Band 1 von 2, was man sehr, sehr deutlich merkt. Es wirkt auch so, als hätten sie am Ende eines ewig langen Manuskripts das Ganze in zwei Hälften geteilt, denn ein Ende eines Spannungsbogens hat man hier nur minimal. Da es sehr lange Anhänge gibt (Glossar, eine Erklärung des Autors zur Quellenlage, eine lange Leseprobe von Band 2), war ich wirklich überrascht, als es plötzlich zu Ende war. Kurzweilig würde ich auf jeden Fall sagen und wer historische Romane mag, die sich an reale Personen anlehnen und den Fokus weit weg legen von dem, was man so von Iny Lorentz etc. kennt, der wird das hier wohl unterhaltsam finden. Für die Spartacus-Legende reicht aber sonst auch der Wikipedia-Artikel und fesselnder finde ich persönlich dann doch das Serienformat.
